天満橋・天神橋・難波橋は江戸時代以来、大坂の町にとって最も重要で、最も親しまれてきた橋である。当時としては最大級の橋で、この三橋は浪華の三大橋と呼ばれた。江戸時代には、ともに公儀橋に指定され、幕府の直轄管理となっていた。大坂の市街地を南北に結ぶ三大橋は市民の生活にも密接に関わる橋となり、都市発展に重要な役割をはたした。東西の町奉行所が、天満橋の南側にあり（のち西町奉行所は本町橋の東北詰へ移転）、谷町筋から東側には様々な役所があった。橋の北側には役所の倉庫や町与力の屋敷があり、天満橋はこれらの役人の通勤経路や役所間の連絡にも利用されたと考えられ、官の性格が非常に強い橋であったと言えよう。

明治になり、天満橋・天神橋はほぼ同じ経過で架け替えが行われた。明治18年7月初めの大洪水によって両橋とも流失し、その復旧事業として、両橋ともに鉄橋に架け替えられた。この鉄橋の主要部材は天神橋と同じく、全てドイツ製であったが、鉄製の高欄、照明柱、橋名額は両橋とも国産品が用いられた。橋名額は現在も北詰の公園内に保存されている。

現在の天満橋は、昭和10年に重厚なゲルバー式鋼桁橋に架け替えられたものである。この桁の形状に対して当時の担当者が「のびのびとした、鳥が翼を広げたような形」と表現したように、景観上バランスのよい桁橋である。

戦後、自動車交通の発達により天満橋は、交通上のネックになり、昭和45年に高架橋が建設された。在来の天満橋の上に重ねる型式とし、設計荷重としては旧市電の軌道敷部の荷重と高架橋のそれと置き換えるように考えられた。さらに、平成元...
