Kanazawa Yokujo (Kanazawa Yu) — Local services in Tokyo

Very average sento. Generally, Japanese public baths seem a lot more basic than Korean ones where there is ample variance in bath temperature and other facilities (hair dryers, face creams, scrubbing mits, etc). The three baths are ostensibly the same and there is no dry/wet sauna. Probably the worst part is there is no cold pool and only one standing shower that will actually give cold water. Washing stations have one stream of lukewarm water with no ability to change the temperature. No towels provided (could be rented which I only found out after entering, which to be fair is due to my own ignorance and lack of Japanese), which made for a unpleasant t-shirt-as-a-towel drying experience. Even the hair dryer was pay to use.

新宿の喧騒を抜け出し、東新宿駅から徒歩5分ほどの住宅街を歩くと、ひっそりと佇む「金沢浴場」にたどり着きます。その外観は一見すると古びたマンションの一部のようですが、近づくと高くそびえる煙突が目に入り、ここが銭湯であることを静かに主張しています。

暖簾をくぐり、フロントで入浴料を支払います。都内の一般的な銭湯料金で、手頃な価格です。脱衣所は清潔に保たれており、ロッカーの配置も使いやすく、古き良き時代の面影を感じさせます。

浴室に入ると、まず目を引くのは高い天井と広々とした空間です。壁にはヨーロッパの湖畔風景を描いたタイル絵が施され、虹がかかる山々や湖、そして古城が幻想的に描かれています。この絵を眺めていると、まるで異国の地に迷い込んだかのような気分になります。

浴槽は3種類あり、それぞれに特徴があります。左手にはジェットバスが2つ、中央にはバイブラバス、そして右手には竹で囲まれた半個室風の檜風呂があります。特にこの檜風呂は、竹の囲いによって視界が適度に遮られ、プライベート感を味わえると同時に、檜の香りが心地よく、リラックス効果を高めてくれます。

お湯は地下水を使用しており、やや熱めの設定ですが、芯から温まることができます。湯温は約43度と表示されていますが、体感的にはもう少し高く感じられるかもしれません。湯上がりには肌がすべすべになり、まるで温泉に浸かったかのような満足感を得られます。

施設内にはサウナや水風呂はありませんが、その分、シンプルなお風呂をじっくり楽しむことができます。また、脱衣所にはテレビ付きの休憩スペースがあり、湯上がりに一息つくのに最適です。自動販売機やコインランドリーも併設されているので、長時間滞在する際にも便利です。

訪れた際、地元の常連客らしき方々が多く、和やかな雰囲気が漂っていました。新宿という大都会の中で、こんなにも落ち着いた空間が存在することに驚きと感動を覚えました。
