Shinjuku Eastside Square — Local services in Tokyo

The subterranean level of Shinjuku Eastside Square is perhaps one the most pleasant spots to relax outdoors amid Tokyo’s increasingly oppressive summer heat.

Though this spacious plaza with copious amounts of public seating—extremely rare in Tokyo as a whole, and especially so in the capital city of Shinjuku—offers far too little shelter from Tokyo’s frequent rain showers, it remains remarkably cool and comfortable in the hottest weather.

There’s usually a number of choices to sit outdoors but under the shade of the ground level without needing to purchase food or drink from one of the shops.

Even with the all the fountains now seemingly permanently shut down, the plaza continues to over precarious peace and quiet away from the typical hustle and bustle of most public areas in Tokyo.

Though most of the businesses, including several restaurants, a Tully’s Coffee Shop, and the tasty Bunk Sandwich shop close far too early, the plaza remains open 24/7.
