Reservations and modifications to reservations are difficult to do via email. Staff misses emails about modifications/changes to reservations and charge for “no shows”. I emailed Tribal Tulum to book one of their classes after paying online. Joanne responded and booked me a class right away. I was grateful for the fast response. The day of my class, something came up on my end and I was no longer able to attend that class. I emailed Joanne 4 hours before the class and visited the studio to let them know that I wouldn’t be able to make the class and that I wanted to attend the next one available. I got a response from Joanne the night of the class asking why I didn’t show up and that they had an instructor waiting for me. I felt bad but I also emailed her before class saying I wasn’t able to make it and notified the front desk in person. Although I forwarded her my email about the cancellation, she denied receiving it and offered to sign me up for a class and having to pay half of the price. She also mentioned that the desk doesn’t do a great job communicating. This was a problem for me because I was on a tight budget and I thought it was strange that I had to pay more for Tribal Tulum’s communication error. After leaving Tulum, I got another message from Joanne asking if I attended a class today and she requested to email her before I show up. I was already back in the US so I said “no” , which shows the lack of communication between the yoga studio and the booking system. In short, I wish the email/reservation system could be better. Also, it was frustrating because even though I showed her my sent email about rescheduling before the class, she didn’t acknowledge receipt of the email and tried to charge me more than what I already paid for.

Tribal Tulum is hands down my most favorite yoga studio anywhere (I haven’t found another studio in the states that’s a match yet). I discovered it years ago before the pandemic on a yoga retreat website and chose it based on reviews. I chose correctly and have been going ever since. Joanne the owner is not only hospitable and conscientious as a business owner and the host, I love her yoga practice and she seems to employ the best yoga instructors I have ever taken with. I always say it’s like taking a university class with some of her instructors (like Eugenia) who is very detailed oriented and pays attention to your skill level and they offer corrections and adjustments to your comfort level. Joanne’s yin yoga class is probably my favorite. They challenge me in a way that I can feel myself getting stronger, physically and mentally. Love her rooftop for meditation and quiet relaxation. I can ramble on about Tribal Tulum; love staying in her lofts (with fridge and kitchen), great location a quick 5-10 bike ride to Tulum Centro, 5 min walk to my favorite Chedraui which is like one-stop shop Costco/Walmart/Target all-in-one 😊, and 20-25 min bike to the beach and Mayan ruins. Every time I go to Tulum, whether or not I stay in their lofts, I always come here for yoga. x

This was my first yoga retreat and the best experience. A friend and I did the 6 day yoga retreat and wish we had done longer by the end of it. Joanne is such an amazing person and so accommodating. It feels like you’re at home during your stay. You have everything you need in your room and we even cooked a few meals. There is a big supermarket right across the street which was very convenient. I loved petting all of the cats and biking around town. The yoga was amazing and I loved all of the teachers and the unique classes. I really enjoyed Ricardo’s classes that had a mix of Tai Chi feel in the yoga classes, the flow was very fluid and meditative. We did a dive for one of our days and were still able to do yoga in the evening. The scuba dive was an amazing experience worth doing and our instructor, Orlando was awesome. We went to the Tulum ruins early in the morning right at opening to avoid the crowds. Getting to the beach early in the morning is best too, as it tended to rain in the afternoons. Our favorite restaurant was Cetli, a wonderful authentic Mexican food experience. Love is truly put into their vibrant and tasteful dishes.

Arrival: Upon arrival, I was greeted by Joanne in a very friendly manner with a fresh cup of delicious coffee. She made me feel at home right away and there was absolutely no formality which I loved! She offered to take me to a Maiyan cleanse for free while I waited for my room. On the way back she drove myself and another lady (also staying in the lofts) to the grocery store in case we wanted to pick anything up. These were generous gestures which made me feel comfortable right away.

Accommodations: The room was beautiful and stocked up with fresh fruit and water (I even had some left over after my 5 day stay). The room was also cleaned regularly. Joanne also provides a bike for your stay which quickly becomes your best friend. They also have some of the best scuba and free diving instructors which I wish I had tried if I was staying longer.

Yoga: I tried to attend at least 1 yoga class a day and found there is much variety and something for everyone. There were people attending with various yoga backgrounds. (You can attend even if you’re a beginner). I liked the incorporation of essential oils and more breathing techniques than I’m used to.

The staff: Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I found Leif provided me with the most information and was very cheerful even when I asked him to repeat some suggestions. They had a new member named Malin who is helping out for a little while. She was willing to travel along with me to some bars and cenote when she wasn’t working. If you’re lucky she will be there when you visit!

Location: The retreat is in a convenient location. It doesn’t take too long to bike to the beach or even some cenote. I biked to 2 nearby cenote during my visit which were beautiful. There are also some delicious restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Tulum: Tulum itself is gorgeous, safe and I’d definitely revisit. This loft fits the Tulum vibe of positivity and slow living perfectly!

Thank you all for making my first solo vacation...

"A wonderful and unique Yoga and SCUBA retreat" Tribal Tulum gets 5 stars from me. Joanne was extremely responsive from my first inquiry and built a custom program allowing me to maximise my yoga and diving. The accommodation is spacious, clean, well appointed and very comfortable. The kitchenette is great and allows you to eat in if you want - although there are an ample supply of great restaurants for every budget within a short walk of Tribal. Breakfast was freshly prepared each day and was varied and delicious. Joanne is a marvelous host and nothing is too much trouble. I joined her most mornings for her sunrise beach mediation (not to be missed if you love stunning sunrises above a beautiful blue ocean) She also was great at recommending different things to do in and around Tulum. If you get a chance do a Mayan Temple Tour and a Temazcal. The yoga studio is a very calming space and the Teachers she has assembled (along with herself) are passionate professionals who will work with you to get the most from your practice whatever that might be
. And on New Years Eve we had just the best Chakra focussed Sound Bath. The Diving is outstanding. Alex and Orlando were great Instructors and took me to an amazing array of Cenotes from majestic cathedrals of stalagmites and stalactites, to The Pit a 115 foot multilevel dive featuring great halocline and hydrogen sulfide layers and just about everything in between. I did 10 dives everyone different, including two ocean dives with some amazing swim throughs. There was nothing about Tribal Tulum that I did not like. It was a perfect balance of yoga, meditation, diving, and culture. I highly recommend Tribal Tulum. I had read it was noisy but I did not find it noisy at all - yes it is by the main road to the beach and that does get some traffic but it was never excessively noisy and the convenience of the location far outweighed the fact it was by the road. You even get a bike for your stay to enable you...

Hogar dulce hogar! I rarely write reviews or even return to the same place twice but in Tribal Tulum I’ve found my tribe, my vibe, my home
a very sweet and spiritual home
so how could I not come back?

The rooms are simply purrrfect for any duration with hand-picked items to make your stay extra special: mayan honey soap/shampoo, organic breakfast bags, books, art and furnishings, those dressing gowns.. and how could I not mention the word TOMALES! 😋 All locally sourced, produced, and curated by host Joanne who is on hand to guide and nurture your time in Tulum; from morning meditations along the beach or under a full moon to exploring and tasting local traditions
can not recommend enough a temazcal with a local shaman, or a cleansing massage with a healer but whether you’re simply enjoying your time in the garden, patio or rooftop or making the most of the glorious ocean on your doorstep
You can lose and find yourself again here
just let it go! I hear the diving is awesome too but I came for the yoga and was not disappointed! Tribal offers a variety of yoga styles to elevate your practice to the next level regardless of experience with some of the best teachers in town
. Maya, Eugenia, Blanca too
Joanne of course, we love you đŸ„°

And it’s here at Tribal that you can plug into that OG Tulum vibe! I’ve seen first hand this year the sheer rate of change and development along la Avenida Coba Sur and as Tulum evolves into this ‘conscious’ and progressive centre with many modern promises of wellness, luckily Tribal (aka Joanne) stands out and preserves that feel and vibe that I so affectionately desire
 and now miss!

Come! Stay! Be that change you want to see!!

Please note
I’ll be back! VolverĂ©! Hola y abrazos a Frodo y sus amiguitos y Flaco por...
