Where do I start? The first night we were here, they sold us a fishing trip that went WAY SOUTH! VERY POOR COMMUNICATION! We overplayed for everything, especially the fishing trip! Don't buy it! They showed up late, about an hour, and then said they would make up for it after they cut the trip short! I feel bad for the guys who work here because management has screwed them. We paid more than full price including drinks and were screwed! Management and the captain of the boat didn't have very good communication at all! They said they would take the fish from the boat and bring it to the restaurant to prepare it....yet they wanted us to bring it and after a long talk, they brought it. Santos was a GREAT waiter and tried but to no avail. $450 later, I feel extremely short changed! The food was just ok but it may be biased based on an overall bad experience!

EXCELLENT!!!!! Graham and l frequent this restaurant and bar on a weekly, regular basis. The owner Charlie has the most friendly, helpful, respectful staff who work together as a great team with family members invested into its whole success at this great place. Food, atmosphere, and service top notch! Hugo the guy behind bar makes you welcome and makes great drinks, together with the rest of the happy, lively staff. They celebrated their 16th Anniversary yesterday November 16, 2024 and what a great night. So happy to have been part of the celebration! Thanks to all El Capitan team of great staff!!!!!! On the way out, please ring the bell to show your appreciation of a great meal and great service. NOTE they have the El Capitan Hotel attached to the premises as well for any overnight stay! Graham and Linda Wright, Leamington, Canada and La Veleta, Tulum.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! BEST SEAFOOD! VERY REASONABLE! We asked our hotel on the first night in Tulum what they would recommend for Seafood...they immediately said El Capitan. We ordered their Pirate Tacos which were shrimp tacos with a spinach aioli and it was the BEST shrimp tacos I've had in my life! I also ordered the catch of the day which was Rubia (also known as Yellowtail Snapper) which was grilled to perfection, buttery and delicious! We loved our dinner so much we decided to return 2 nights later and I got to have the Mixed Ceviche with Bass, Shrimp and Octopus, OH MY GOSH was it delicious and fresh! My mom enjoyed the shrimp fajitas which were just as delicious! Definitely go here if you are looking for fresh delicious seafood for reasonable prices. They have 2 locations in Tulum but we went to the one off of Av. Coba both times

I'm honestly surprised at the amount of stellar reviews of this place and even a claim that this restaurant serves "gourmet" food.

The complimentary chips and salsa came with no salsa. The pique was literally hot oil with no sign of peppers (I shook the bottle). The other condiments were mayonnaise and chopped raw chili pepper.

I've never ever heard of or had ceviche with fried onions. I gave it a try anyway. The fish was okay but the greasy fried onions dominated a medium portion that looked like it was prepared for a table of 6.

The rest of the food was soggy veggie quesadilla, soggy, stale nachos, and semi-decent shrimp tacos.

As we were being seated, we were told that its cash only. Okay. At the end of the "meal" we received a bill for 950 MXN pesos. Converted to USD it was $53 and change. I left $55 and we walked away only to be summoned back with the demand that we pay more for the conversion of USD to MXN.

Disgusting would be a more appropriate way to describe the food and the experience. I've had better tacos from a hole in a wall establishments and taco trucks.

My only solace was warning another couple who was about to dine in there to stay away.

Update 7/18/24: I used Google translate to view the owner's reply. While I appreciate the apology from the owner, the server could use a bit of training in hospitality:

  1. There was no "take out." We left most of the uneaten food behind.
  2. The server never asked us how the food was.
  3. When the server delivered the bill, he hand wrote an addition of a cocktail, which wasn't printed on the bill but he didn't bother to mention the exchange rate.
  4. When the server called us back for more money, he did so by screaming from across the dining room and forced me to come see the sign that was all the way on the other side of the dining room adjacent to what looked like an office. The sign was hard to understand because it didn't say much of anything other than a hand written number 15.

We went out of our way to get more cash because we were told "cash only," even though the only visible sign in the restaurant stated that all major credit cards were accepted including cash and then got yelled at. The food was subpar, but the service...

A friend told us that the place was fantastic. We walked up there and was greeted and sat quickly. Ordered two beers, got the wrong ones no biggie. Second round, order was corrected. Started with the oysters, very small, a few tasted good and a couple of them were warm and bad tasting. I put them in a Napkin, nobody followed up to see if we were good. Awile past and we were asked if we'd like anything else. I ordered the coconut shrimp. About 20 mins later and empty beers I had to get up to bother the staff eating birthday cake and chatting behind the bar for the check. It was slow, you can see the cooks weren't cooking anything...the servers didn't seem to care here about our table, to busy celebrating a staff members birthday. The shrimp was never ordered. I was told as I was paying that the tip wasn't included. Maybe do your job, and you'll get tips. I never got my shrimp, specially went there for the octopus but never made it to that point. 3 weeks here, worse experience so far. Reviews are great, maybe I just came at the...
