Best Gym in Auckland.
Pros: atmosphere (this will always be a subjective measure) = I love the large windows overlooking the lush green race course, the interior colour scheme isn't over stimulating which makes it easy to focus, other members are polite and curtious
layout = I honestly cannot imagine swapping back to any other gym layout but this. A very long gym space, which allows for all the equipment to be spread out evenly, means it never feels cluttered / never feels like you are amoungst a forest of stacked good. It also means you never feel like you are the centre of attention, which means your attention is on your own improvement and not on how you might look to the whole room (which may not be a worry for some, but even I as a pretty self confident person really appreciate it). Honestly, it may be a large gym area, but it has all the charm of a small secret gym
equipment = good volume of equipment, excellent condition, as far as I can tell everyone when I have gone wipes down equipment after use if sweaty. I am not saying I always expect it to be that way, but I don't care if it happens once/twice a year (not that I have even had it once). Mirrors in the far area are abundant, you don't compete for space to use them, and allow for you to better your form.
showers on site have good size, water temp + pressure
professional cleaning staff come every night around 10pm, I have gone to the gym when they are in & they clearly take pride in keeping the gym clean
free classes are a bonus, allow for any ability level to meet new people / make new friends. I haven't done a class yet but seen all ages attend (some in their 20s some in their 60s), everyone looks happy, my own schedule means I just happen to not overlap with class times more
24h access is great
parking is free & 24hr free
next to a super market, so you can do groceries on the way home
complementary personal training session, allows you to meet one of the friendly personal trainers, learn some new things / learn how to use equipment you haven't tried before
price is very reasonable for the quality of everything.
they offer a free trial day if you come during staffed hours
literally next door to a seperate sauna / ice bath business if you want to look into that (I haven't been in but looks like it's worth checking out at some point)
can recommend Seb, one of the Gym managers, as an excellent personal trainer and future friend if you are looking to go from no regular exercise for years back to reaching your old fitness & beyond.
Cons: well I want the gym to be successful enough to build a swimming pool / some tennis courts / some squash courts one day (even if it's at a nearby seperate address, as I don't want them to ever move). These things are the only things which you might say are 'missing', but I scouted out a lot of gyms in Auckland, and concluded Oxygen Fitness was the best in all categories it has the facilities for, as well as independently as the best value for money (I encourage anyone looking for a gym to try lots of gyms to see if the culture/atmosphere there is right for you). The Next Gen Club in the domain for example, has a pool & courts, but looks no where as nice in terms of it's core gym area and costs something like $90 per week...
Read moreI've given it 4 stars because the facilities really are good, equipment is new and layout is great. Clean and very quiet, but here is what lets it down-The Customer Service, or lack of it, and this is obviously just my opinion based on my experience and observations.
I've been a member for 3 months now, not one staff member has approached me asking how I'm enjoying the gym, if I need anything since I joined. Just the standard kind of things you should ask a new member . ...customer service 101.
The owner or assistant manager will sit at the desk, ignore you or give you a nod if you're lucky. It dampens the whole experience for me. I don't feel welcome here, that's the vibe I get anyway.
I workout in the afternoon and a lady came by once and asked if anyone was there as wanted to speak to a staff member about joining. I checked for her...nobody at the desk, nobody at the counter!! Two staff came back 30 minutes later and when I told the front desk, she said they had just been across the road for a meeting. Always, always have someone at the desk or onsite. Even if you are gone for 5 minutes, you have the potential of losing a customer.. which they probably did in this case.
As someone who has owned businesses (including a PT studio previously), I hope you take this constructive criticism onboard and rectify it . Gym has heaps...
Read moreI’ve been a member of this gym for some time, and while I appreciate the clean facilities and the smaller crowd during off-peak hours, I had an experience recently that left me feeling uncomfortable.
During a recent visit, my partner and I were approached by one of the cofounders, who asked if we had swiped our key tags. While I understand the importance of following gym protocols, it was noticeable that no other members were questioned, despite the gym being nearly empty. This left me feeling singled out without a clear reason.
Later during the same visit, my partner dropped the weights heavier than usual in a set due to fatigue. Instead of addressing it in a constructive or private way, the cofounder called out in a manner that felt abrupt and unnecessarily confrontational.
I’ve also observed that this individual appears friendly and welcoming to other members, but our interactions have often felt less warm or inviting. It gives the impression of unequal treatment, which is disheartening as a paying member.
I value fairness and a positive atmosphere in a gym environment, so I hope this feedback helps bring attention to how all members can feel equally respected and...
