I would give Coco Republic 0 stars if it was an option.
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding the poor after sales service and defective furniture I have received from Coco Republic Furniture in Auckland with issues having arisen as early as 2 months upon receipt of furniture and 2.5 years later with no reasonable remedy provided.
Three of our four dining chairs and one of our three bar stools in a woven leather style have had stitching/woven leather come undone. A bar stool was replaced and one dining chairs subsequently repaired by Cocorepublic’s third party appointed repair service (The Leather Doctor). A second technician was called out after a few weeks for another chair of which he advised that the he would not take for repairs and deemed this to be a manufacturing/material defect. Following on from this, Cocorepublic only offered a credit for the amount we paid for the dining chairs to select a new set (we would need to pay the difference for the price of the chairs the business has available currently which would leave us further out of pocket and would not offer a remedy for the matching bar stools). We sought advice from Consumer Protection of which we were advised that given we had purchased the stools as a matching set, the product is no longer fit for purpose and given we have provided Cocorepublic with the opportunity to repair under the Consumer Guarantees Act, if unsuccessful they provide replacement/refund. We have followed up numerous times from our last response since July 2024 with no response to emails or calls to the Product Service team. We are not able to use our chairs/stools in the current state fearing any weight will be unsupported.
Our Atelier sofa in Melrose Rivercok developed a large unusual patch along the back and side 10 months later. The Leather Doctor deemed this to be strange and unconclusive as to how this had developed. We sought out a second opinion from Micro Seal (recommended by Cocorepublic to seal the leather from any stains). The technician confirmed that the Microseal product is working as it should and the patch is not due to any stain but appears to be a breakdown in the leather coating due to exposure from the sun. We receive minimal sunlight in our living room, but this should not be occurring regardless especially in less than a year.
Overall, the customer service has been unprofessional and unhelpful. We’ve had to take this matter to the Disputes Tribunal after being ignored by Coco Republic for months. It's embarrassing having guests over with broken furniture, and the lack of support or compensation from the company is truly disappointing.
We had purchased majority of our new furniture from Cocorepublic including dining table, occasional chairs and entertainment unit. However the poor after purchase customer service we have received is unacceptable, we will no longer be returning as a customer and we strongly advise future buyers to be cautious before purchasing from Coco Republic, as our experience has been extremely disappointing and unsatisfactory. I have shopped at Coco Republic twice, I won't be back. The first time was for my living room couches that I waited almost a year for. We were told that two pieces would be missing TWO WKs before they were due to arrive because they were "no longer in production". We found out that they were actually sold in Coco Republic's American store. The issue was resolved eventually, which led to our second purchase. Big mistake. We ordered an entertainment unit in Oct '23 and found it to be defective upon delivery. It took two months to get their "craftsman" on-site (third-party contractor) and he affirmed that it was shoddy manufacturing. We complained to Coco Republic and they ignored our emails for 2-3 months. Neither Chris nor Christine Tokonoa would acknowledge that the craftsman reported manufacturing defects and insisted on a second report. The second visit NEVER came. We had enough. We emailed Christine and found out that my email address was blocked by her! It was only when we emailed Christine's colleague, Chris, that we would bring our case to the Disputes Tribunal that we received a response from her. However, Christine has been treating us extremely disrespectfully and not properly addressing our questions about the remedies available under the consumer guarantees act.
