Intihuatana Park — Local services in Lima Metropolitan Area

Intihuatana Park, or Parque Intihuatana as it is known locally, is one of the many parks along the spectacular Malecon (“boardwalk” in Spanish) of Miraflores, Lima's affluent and picturesque seaside district. It's a fairly small park but nonetheless offers spectacular views over the bay of Lima and the Pacific Ocean. It's a great park to just sit and ponder, people watch, or look out over the beach of Miraflores, watch the surfers riding the waves or the paragliders soaring into the skies high above the Pacific.

What I like about the parks along the Malecon is that each has one or more unique characteristic features or attractions and at Parque Intihuatana this is the rather formidable Intihuatana sculpture made by Peruvian visual artist Fernando de Szyszlo.

En el distrito costeño de Miraflores (Lima) existe una escultura abstracta geométrica de piedra llamada Intihuatana del escultor peruano Fernando de Szyszlo Valdelomar (1925 - 1917). Dicha escultura se encuentra pasando el puente Villena, viniendo desde el parque Faro de la Marina. Dicho proyecto se inició con el ingeniero Felipe Thorndike Beltrán, quien era director secretario del Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo. La escultura Intihuatana fue inaugurada con el apoyo de la Fundación Telefónica, la Municipalidad de Miraflores y la Fundación de Arte Contemporáneo. El momento de su inauguración Fernando de Szyszlo tuvo las siguientes palabras "Para el mundo quechua es el lugar en donde el sol se amarra. Lima con su cielo gris necesita también un Intihuatana con el propósito mágico de sujetar el sol" Este parque llamado también Mariano Necochea, fue inaugurado el 6 de abril de 1949, durante el gobierno del General de Brigada Manuel Odría, tuvo el propósito de homenajear la memoria del prócer de la independencia del Perú, quien fue triunfador de la batalla de Junín por el centenario de su muerte. The park is just cross the bridge from the Parque del Amor, and it’s very close to the shopping center Larcomar. It has a beautiful view of the coastline, a nice sculpture and a good crepe store (which is usually very busy during weekends).
