In the winter of 2015, I chanced upon Vysokopetrovsky Monastery; though slightly dilapidated then, it exuded a strong sense of history that sparked my curiosity about its past. The monastery’s origin ties to Peter the Great: at 17, he faced a conspiracy by his sister Regent Sophia and Moscow Strelets rebels, fled to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiev Posad, and after dreaming of St. Sergius promising protection, returned to Moscow, crushed the rebels, and ordered the construction of St. Sergius Refectory Church (part of the monastery) in gratitude. Its fate has been turbulent: in 1812, Napoleon’s troops desecrated the church as a slaughterhouse, destroying tombstones and looting icons; post-1917 Revolution, it closed in 1929 (turned into an agricultural machinery factory) with domes and crosses destroyed in 1930, later restored by architect Boris Dudushkin between 1950-1980, regaining its original look in 1982 and holding its first Mass in 84 years on December 21, 2013. A notable part of its history involves Archbishop Varflomey Remov (1888-1935): once a top assistant to Orthodox Archbishop Sergius Stragorodsky, he secretly converted to Catholicism in 1932, was appointed head of the Titular Diocese of Sergiev by Pope Pius XI in 1933, led an underground Vysokopetrovsky Monastery at the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Mary Church in Putinki hosting secret Catholic services, was arrested in February 1935, and executed soon after—symbolizing Catholic resistance under Soviet atheist oppression. Overall, the monastery bears witness to Russia’s historical shifts and religious perseverance, embodying profound historical and spiritual significance.
