Read moreODEL: Odel (stylized as O▷ΞL and ODEL) was Sri Lanka's first public retail company that started as a single-person company focused on retail clothing and within a year became the country's first department store. It offers watches, sunglasses, jewelry, children's products, daily necessities, food and beverages, souvenirs and gifts.
The company was started in 1989 by Otara Gunewardene when he began selling factory surplus clothing and fabrics from the boot of his car to his family and friends.
Gunewardene registered Odel (named after his own name, Otara Del Gunewardene) as a private limited liability company on 31 October 1990 and the company opened its first 37 square metres (400 sq ft) store on Dickmans Road, Colombo. In 1994 they opened their second store in Majestic City and by 1995 the company had a total of nine stores in hotels and shopping centres across the city of Colombo. In 1996, Odell opened a 930 square metre (10,000 sq ft) flagship store at Alexandra Place in Colombo, which was expanded to a further 3,700 square metres (40,000 sq ft) in 2000. In 2005, the company opened a store at the departure/transit lounge of Bandaranaike International Airport as part of an initiative in conjunction with the airport expansion project. Odell opened two more stores in Kohuwela and Ja-Ela. In 2009, they opened three more stores in Nugegoda, Mount Lavinia and Moratuwa. The following year, the company opened three more stores in Panadura, Maharagama and Battaramulla. On 24 February 2010, it was converted into a public limited liability company and in July, Odell became the first fashion retail business to be listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange.
In 2012, the company opened stores in Wattala, Kiribathgoda and Kandy City Centre Shopping Complex, its first store outside the Western Province. Odell also launched Luv S.L.O. - a concept store carrying stylish souvenirs and merchandise for locals and tourists - and opened Luv S.L.O. stores at the Queen's Hotel, Kandy and the Old Colombo Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct. In July 2012, Parkson Retail Asia Limited acquired a 41.82 percent stake in the company for Tk 1.424 billion.
In September 2014, Gunewardene sold the majority of his shares in Odell PLC to Softlogic Group for Tk 2.7 billion. Softlogic subsequently increased its shareholding and as of June 30, 2016, it held a 96.67 percent stake in...
Read moreDid not intend to go here. We were actually looking for textile materials as Colombo offered good deals. However we were directed here with the comment "you can get textile here"
After arriving we realized it was a nicely ramped up tourist place with different types of souvenirs ranging from magnets to t-shirts to spa stuff to paper made of cow dung... At the end no textile was purchased. The so called textile was actually t-shirts.
Stuff are pretty expensive. Going up to level 2 and 3 are wierd as you have to walk to the end and then to come down you have to walk another direction.
There is also Mango outlet, shop specialised in tea leaves and mothercare within ODEL.
Don't worry if you can't afford to make a stop here. You can still catch at transit of Colombo airport albeit smaller but still able to get most of the souvenir items (and items are priced higher in d transit)
ODEL is also located at the former Dutch Hospital opposite Fairway Colombo Hotel.
Alternate souvenir shops you can go to is Laksala (one of the location is just behind Fairway Colombo Hotel at a red building).
Or you go to Pettah Bazaar which is like 30 mins walk (towards red mosque) from Fairway Colombo hotel and you can get a lot of...
