I visited the pool on Friday 2nd June at 19:00 after booking online. Firstly, the booking experience was difficult as the app was not working but the South Downs Leisure website didn't have the pool as an option to book, so the only way I was able to book was by adding the swimming slot to my cart on the app and then logging into the website to check out. Then when I got to the pool the changing rooms were gross, for a pool that had been open for members only for one week I was really surprised at how bad they were. There was standing water everywhere, rubbish on the benches, every single locker was dirty meaning that I didn't even want to put my things in it as they would come out dirty. The unisex toilets had urine all over the seats meaning that I couldn't use the toilet and then when I came out of the toilets both soap dispensers were broken. It appeared as though no one had cleaned that day, or perhaps for even longer. Someone really should be doing checks every hour or so and wiping down the insides of the lockers, pushing the standing water into the drains with a squeegee, collecting any rubbish, looking over and cleaning any toilets and checking that things like the soap dispensers are full and working. The pool itself was nice, very cold though and the cold breeze coming off the sea made it feel even colder. For some reason you swim in the lane anti-clockwise which I have never seen before. I'd also recommend goggles that have some sun protection in them as the sun bouncing off the water was blinding. For £11 per swim I don't plan to come here again unless there is a real effort made to address the state of the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāve been going to the sea lanes pool since late june and so far I like it. For a one off swim it is a little pricey but the membership is really reasonable at Ā£50 a month and I can go as much as I want. It also stays open pretty late the last slot being usually 8ish. Itās so glorious when the sun is setting in the evening and I tend to get a lane to myself.
The pool is quite cold for a heated pool especially if itās not nice weather which is a shame as itās not going to be the nicest in the winter and I donāt really want to have to get in an out of a wetsuit every evening :(
The changing rooms were a little unkept to start with but for a new pool things arenāt going to be perfect straight away and Iāve found more recently itās been well cleaned and maintained.
I do wish that it had a swimming costume spin dryer in there as I go most evenings my costume would dry off easier and wouldnāt make my bag all wet and would prolong me having to get another costume as soon- the joys of swimming lol. The showers are nice and warm and plenty of lockers on the pool side and in changing room.
It would be great if they sold bottles of water too as sometimes I forget my bottle and I donāt really want to get in an out to use the water fountain especially if itās a windy cold day.
The sign up for the membership was a little faffy but once your signed up to the app and membership itās really easy to book even at short notice. You can see how busy it is too which is great.
Overall I really do enjoy this pool and itās a lot nicer than others in Brighton - it just needs to be a bit warmer and then it would be almost perfect all...
Read moreReview of the pool as a local amature athlete. There is much good here (I've been 3 times over ~18 months), and on paper I should be the perfect customer base, but the practicalities and economics of pool usage as a "national open water" training centre are completely beyond me. Speechless really. TL;DR I had to pay £23.50 for ONE swim.
As a pool set up for OW training and distance swimming, a wetsuit is absolutely necessary. Yes, many casual swimmers appear to be happy with a 20-30 minute dip, but at 18-20C, no way many fit, lean distance athletes are doing 1-2+ hour work out in only a swimsuit.
Ā£50 a month is still pricey, even making good use of the pool. But how is one supposed to be in/out of a wetsuit at least twice a week for value? Also, no plausible car parking, so it's walk / bike in.
Thus, for people like me, occasional one-off payment of £11.75(!), for what is otherwise a nice facility. Ok, BUT remember, it's £11.75 per hour. I swim distance, and drills and almost always go over one hour. So, not realising, this weekend I was charged £23.50 for a single training swim of around 2 hours. They actually charged me this with a straight face, and made no suggestions or dialouge over any alternative price plan. This is "rip-off Britain" on steroids.
Management: you need to fix this ridiculous pricing situaton, given the practicalities of the pool and it's intended use. With a flexible plan, you could, and should, be getting my money regularly - not punishing me for even considering a long work out. For the foreseeble future, this is...
