The food was great. The service was not. The staff seemed to resent the fact that they had customers.
And it wasn't just 1 staff member. As we opened the door the glance from the lady behind the cakes had no trace of a smile or a welcome. The lady who took our order did it as swiftly and gruffly as possible and stormed off to berate some other customers. The ladies serving the food took no joy in their jobs.
We had been before a few weeks ago and also noticed the distinct lack of friendliness, but assumed it was just a one off, so we tried again. I've been trying to work out what the problem was, because they really put a damper on an otherwise lovely day out in Kemptown.
Was it that we pushed 2 tables together to fit our party of 5? The table behind us did the same, and I don't think we did it in a particularity disruptive way.
Was it that we had our baby with us? There were other babies there and they provide high chairs, so I don't think they can be anti-small-people in general. We changed the baby downstairs and as she was passing the in charge looking lady thrust a plastic bag at us, said "use this" and stormed off. I think it was to put the nappy in and take with us. As if she'd taken one look at us and identified notorious dirty nappy litterers.
Was it that 3/4 of us are Asian?
Had something awful happened in the kitchen that morning? If so, go out back and break some plates, but please don't take it out on your customers.
We won't be going back. If you want to give it a try and you're white, childless and have exactly the right number of people to fit on the tables available at the time, please let me know how it goes. Service like this really makes good...
Read moreI ordered chilli scrambled eggs and spinach on sour dough toast with 2x hash browns. My partner ordered bacon, fried eggs on sour dough bread and a coke each. This set us back £30 after a 10% discount was applied. The scrambled eggs and sour dough were a solid 4 stars, I also tried my partners and it was very good, the bacon was super crispy, yum. The hash browns had been over complicated, filled with garlic and herbs and it was not actually a hash brown, it was more like an air fried or baked lump of mash potato. The lady asked if I enjoyed the food and the answer was mostly yes, but she asked if I wanted the hash brown to take with me and that's when I noted that they weren't to my taste, but I think she took it an insult, not the criticism intended. Hash browns have the potatoes and grated or riced, onions, dried, flavoured and fried. The response of, "well this is our unique take on them" would be accepted if it were not mash. It was not a hash brown sadly and I love hash browns. I even asked if they done them before we were seated. Lovely food otherwise though. Food was originally given to us incorrectly but the team quickly rectified the mistake.
Sadly when I left my verdict with the waitress (and possibly owner) I feel she took it personally and we had to go up to the front desk to pay in the end despite it being...
Read moreMy best friend and I went to Egg & Spoon on Sunday morning for breakfast and was left very disappointed. My Eggs Florentine came out almost immediately and had too much hollandaise sauce on the plate making the toasted muffins a soggy mess. I waited for about 5 minutes before I slowly started to eat the first half of the breakfast waiting for my friends waffles to come. I finished the first half and then decided I would wait until her food arrived to finish my meal. After about 15 minutes, we asked the waitress where the waffles were. We were told that they would be a couple of minutes and it was because people ordered in between us that there was a delay. This was completely incorrect as my friend and I ordered one after the other at the till and the next group into the cafe arrived about 10 minutes after us. After about 30 minutes the waffles arrived. It was an absolute mountain of waffles with two tiny pieces of bacon and next to no maple syrup (we had to ask for more). By this point my meal was cold, eggs were overcooked and at no stage did any of the staff apologize for the wait on the food or offer my friend a free coffee/discount. Was sadly a really bad way to start off out last day in Brighton. Wouldn't recommend given the quality of service and food. Basics that a nice cafe should have nailed especially when...
