It's not often a grass roots music venue comes along and has the impact that The Adelphi club has. I'd say the Adelphi as much created a community as it did provide a space for the live music/musicians and culture community to come together, especially in the 90's when there were few such spaces. Friends hired out the Adelphi club in 1994 and threw a birthday party for my 18th, that following year I hired it to hold a benefit gig with Oi Polloi from Edinburgh, Hull punk band Slander and DHB, it was ace, as were the open mic nights and countless musicians and bands I saw there over the years, including bands like Ifang Bondi from Africa. I volunteered to help with the internal refurbishment and redesign when it was revamped with that wonderful interior designers ideas for things like the bus-bar and the spiral hallway to the loos. I also worked there serving on occasions when Paul as short staffed or when I was between jobs. And Paul Jackson, what a legend, never once saw him flinch or get bothered by anything, nothing seemed to phase him. The other staff that worked in there, all absolute gems. I have family in Italy and once when I was visiting them I bumped into a bloke wearing a Fonda 500 T. Shirt, his girlfriend had been to Hull Uni and loved the Adelphi and Fonda 500 she'd bought t.shirts for all her family, It's the most wonderful question to be asked by an Italian family in Italy, 'Oh you're from Hull, you know the Adelphi club yes? As I say, what Paul Jackson, the musician's, poets, artists, staff pulling pints, and Paul's dog did, they created a community and that community's tentacles extend around the world. Well...
Read moreI bought two tickets for myself and my wife, to see Chris Brain perform, and paid by card on the new adelphi website. No virtual tickets were emailed, so I had to rely on taking a screenshot of the transaction on my phone. When we arrived, we were told the artist had cancelled due to illness (yet no email was sent to inform us of this, and we travelled a long distance there). We were told by bar staff, we would get an email with either a refund or a new date for the artist and the tickets would still be valid. The replacement artists consisted of a half drunk bloke who went on political rants in between songs, mumbling something about 'facist bstrds' and another younger guy who could not sing in tune if his life depended on it. The whole place was a tip, run down, all of the seating had rips with foam hanging out, although the bar staff were friendly. After a week I had not received any email about the cancelled event and tickets, so I sent an email in via the email address on the website, and another week on I still have not had any reply. This is supposed to be a professional music venue, but it seems it's just a back street dump, run by useless staff who don't care about paying customers. The website braggs about all of the famous artists who have played there, and seems to rely on past glories, as the truth about the place in it's present state is very different. Avoid at all costs. And if staff/owner bothers to read this, where is my refund for the tickets...
