The Greatest archaeological museum I have visited so far. Though not specialized and having better competitors in the different areas (the Roman museums in Rome and Naples are better for Roman History, the Cretan Museum is better for the Cretan civilization, etc.), this museum encompasses all Ancient Civilizations I am interested in and has gathered millions of findings uncovered by the numerous British expeditions in the Ancient Near East. It took me whole day just to pass quickly the Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian sections. One needs at least a week to cover all interesting objects and to read through the descriptions of the different findings. A place to return numerous times during the lifetime of any enlightened person ! Where else can someone find so grand finds, that have turned the science of mankind history like the Flood Tablet, the Rosetta stone, the palette of Narmer, the Akkadian, Sumerian and Assyrian cuneiform tables and so on and so forth.

Seeing the human history timeline and the level of effort of preservation of the artefacts that the British Museum is just a marvel. A place where not only research groups has access to its rich repository but as a family outing one can instil and be inspired. Hope humanity can preserve for future generations our own civilization better than our predecessors...

I love tve British museum its so big and you can spend the whole dayweeks months there and you find something new. They also have individual exhibitions such as Manga, Edvard Munch, DNA, Terracotta Army, etc its so eclectic. People go to see the Pantheon/Elgin Marbles but I go to see the large stone moai from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Hoa Hakananai'a.

Would definitely recommend checking this museum out, it puts things into perspective. If you are philosophical, chances are you will reflect that there were many nations greater, wealthier and more powerful than us, but they did not take their possessions with them and eventually came to an end. The most extraordinary gallery for me is the Islamic World, the pieces are exquisite and I find a calming feeling being there!

Putting aside the realisation that all of the artefacts have been taken from other countries, make the most of it while they are here! I doubt they’ll be returning them.

Closest tube is Tottenham Court Road and literally a 3...
