When you visit London or even if you live in this amazing city and you are ever walking near Museum Street, don’t miss the opportunity to pop into the Camera Museum, it is literally a goldmine of information about any camera you have ever seen or want to buy. I was in there last week having a coffee and a Kit Kat and just loved the atmosphere and romance of this amazing place, the walls are covered with great images and things to just make you drift off into history, the history of photography, you will love it if you love photography and want to learn about the journey to mobile phone photography which is the only type of photography most kids know these days. The quality you get from printing a photograph taken with a Leica or a Hasselblad is incomparable.
They have for sale, Hasselblad’s which is literally the rolls Royce of medium format photography, It’s such a unique place that even if you don’t want to buy a camera you can have a coffee or a soft drink or sandwich surrounded by the history of photography equipment, the people who own and run it are so amazing don’t be afraid to ask questions they are a fountain of information.
Don’t be fooled into thinking its just one floor, or that the camera section at the back is all there is, downstairs is a treasure trove, a goldmine, an Aladdin’s cave of almost every camera you can think of and when you go downstairs (for a small fee,) you will find out why its called a Camera Museum.
This place has been her since. If I remember correctly this place has been here since 1999 so its done well to survive Covid and recession after recession, but remember places like this need support, so even sitting for coffee will help to preserve this rich historic phenomenon. But honestly this is a must visit you can see all of the amazing equipment that makes that phone you use for taking photos suddenly make sense.
Getting there, the nearest underground is Tottenham Court Road, If you come from the New Oxford street direction its on your right hand side surrounded by all types of interesting shops restaurants pubs, eateries and gift shops, and of course you can’t miss the amazing British Museum of course. Take a look at some of my photographs it will give you a little taste and a feel of what you will see...
Read moreThis is my Batcave, my hiding place and my second home. Since photography is my passion and has a big importance in my life, this cafe makes me feel home, like I belong here.
Camera Cafe at Museum Street started in late 1999 as a coffee shop. It actually is the first camera shop with a cafe and an exhibition gallery in the world.
It is a three-floor building and the cafe is on the first one. The first thing you'll notice when coming in, is the collection of camera equipment. Photographer geeks will love it here. They have a lovely exhibition of quality Hasselblad cameras, lenses and accessories. You can sell yours here or take them in part exchange against equipment. Also, they offer an in-house repair service for film cameras and lenses. Pricing is reasonable and sometimes it's for free). I could get into more details, but I'll try to curb my enthusiasm.
About the cafe: I've always craved a cafe with such a comfortable atmosphere. I literally feel like I'm home, especially when I come alone and do my own things. There is plenty of seating space, including the outside area, downstairs and the reception upstairs. They do have the cosiest sofas on the second floor. The decor is so my type -- fancy, but still somehow casual and relaxing. I think the lighting and low music generate the ideal ambience for a quiet date.
They offer the usual drinks you'll find in a cafe. People enjoy the coffee and hipster kids are obsessed over the honey latte. I honestly think the apple and mint fresh juice is the best. They offer sandwiches that are quite good as well.
What you'll find upstairs: On the second floor, there is an exhibition gallery space. It is available for hiring no matter if you're an amateur or a professional photographer. Paintings, ceramics and other types of art are also welcome. This one of the reasons I love this place -- I admire businesses that encourage people to get creative and share their artworks.
Oh, I missed mentioning they have free Wi-fi fast enough to even watch movies online. You couldn't...
Read moreIt is impossible to be more grateful for the attention and advice they have given me in this place. It is the best place to learn about all models of analog cameras, a unique museum in the world.
It has a bar where you can have a conversation with other fellow travelers who work with analog cameras, a pleasant meeting point. The gentleman from the technical service has given me excellent attention. I bought a fantastic Rolleiflex F3.5T here and he give me a 6-month warranty, and he also shows me how the camera works. It guarantees perfect functioning and the cameras have gone through a rigorous and professional review before being put on sale.
If you have thought about going to the London markets, do not buy cameras in the market, I recommend buying your camera in this place, you will have the guarantee that the camera is in perfect condition , the optics for example, EXCELENT CONDITION.
I had to return a Red Color Yashica MAT 124G at the Candem market because a seller cheated me at a souvenir store. Thanks to a review that the professional technical service of the Camera Museum did in this place, I realized it. You can also buy your reels of all kinds here.
You can't miss it, you have to go! and remember, if you are going to buy a camera, it should be...
