So... we are a little split on this musical performance..
If we could score a 2 ½, we would.
Mrs Doubtfire is a super iconic, amazing film.. and whilst no one can replace Robin Williams.. the lead Gabriel Vick was rather good (quite talented with his vocal range and impersonator ability)
We have mixed views on the content of the performance.. whether there was a need to add British politics to an American show?? ..or the need to switch between 1993 and 2023 (can you blend those years seamlessly, from the performance we suggest not)
Too be honest we actually wonder whether we would consider this to actually be a musical?
Carla Dixon-Hernandez as Lydia was amazing.. such a talented actress and singer.. she surely must be older than the age of her character.. fabulous and we think she has the talent and ability to go far.
We can only describe this musical as being the equivalent to marmite.. you are either going to love it... or hate it..
There was a lack of atmosphere, don't get us wrong, there were some funny moments, but compared to many other musicals there was something drastically missing here. (In our opinion)
Apparently Marcus Collins was in the musical.. loved him on X Factor, always thought he was such a great singer... but unfortunately did not even notice or realise he was present.
There appeared to be a very small cast for this musical.. Shaftesbury Theatre is quaint and intimate. Whilst we were in the stalls (I would say there is probably not a bad seat in the house) The ladies toilets were a nightmare at the break, quite disorganised in terms of queueing and many stairs.
All in all.. great hype but in our opinion; lacked substance... and not worth the West End theatre...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I had gone to see the Stranger Things theatre production in the afternoon, and entered the Shaftesbury box office to see if there were any last minute tickets available for Mrs. Doubtfire.
We managed to secure seats for Row G of the Royal Circle for £30 each (instead of £80!) so were chuffed with this. The view was surprisingly good, and the seats were roomy enough to be comfortable (not the case for Stranger Things!).
Admittedly, by the time the show started we were both feeling quite tired. We had been in London since 10am and a large meal made us feel in need of a nap.
Perhaps this affected my ability to properly enjoy the show. I do think it was good, but it wasn’t great.
The actor playing Daniel brought a lot of energy and humour to the role. The rest of the cast were pretty good, but the put on American accents felt a bit grating. I am a big fan of the film (I must have watched it a dozen times). I would have preferred more acting and less bursting into song, but this is of course advertised as a musical.
There was a solo song where the mum (Miranda) hits some very impressive notes. The children have a song or two together and do a good job. Some of the music is a bit happy-clappy for me, and quite forgettable.
All in all, the show guarantees a fun time and I think most who like the film will like this adaption.
There was a minor technical issue in the second half, which led to a few minutes pause. I saw online they had to cancel a show half way through for the same reason, but assume this is just a temporary problem.
I would recommend this, but I have gone to the theatre a lot at this point and wouldn’t put this...
