What a delightful stay at The Montague at the Gardens in Bloomsbury, London! The Montague has everything and more one could wish to find when selecting a place to stay from a beautiful lobby, stunning rooms, a chic bar, dining, afternoon tea, a gym, and the most delightful staff. We stayed in a Deluxe King as we often prefer a room with extra space where we can relax at the end of the day. Before arrival I contacted The Montague to request a room with a garden view, and a surprise of Lanson White Label champagne for our room on arrival as we were finally getting to celebrate my husbands USMC retirement of twenty-nine years of active duty service. Not only did we arrive to find the champagne, but a delightful surprise of sweet treats, and a lovely congratulatory card from the hotel. So very thoughtful! Our room was just beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised that the two windows opened to enjoy the fresh air - this is a rare find in United States hotels. The room was very comfortable with everything one could need. The bathroom with its walk-in shower was lovely. Each day the cleaning staff reset our room, replenished the tea, coffee, and still and sparkling water. Honestly, each day when returned, the room was tidied so well it seemed we had just checked in. Wonderful! We enjoyed the Leopard Bar very much! Most evenings we would enjoy a night cap, chat with the staff, and occasionally a bite. Please do try the Parmesan truffle chips! We also indulged in Afternoon Tea complete with finger sandwiches, amazing scones, sweets, and two pots of tea each! The location is perfect with a lovely park, close walk to the Tube station, many restaurants, and plenty of pubs. I definitely recommend The Montague on the Gardens when visiting London. One will not be disappointed!

Cigar Experiences At The Montague On The Gardens. An experience it was… unfortunately, the single worst experience I’ve ever had the privilege to pay £80 for. I bought this as a special birthday present for my husband, expecting a sophisticated whisky and cigar experience. What was advertised: Comfortable seating on The Montague’s outdoor terrace overlooking the secluded private gardens of the Bedford Estates Choice of Montecristo Petit Edmundo or Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto cigar Glenfiddich 12yo Whisky (50ml) Steak baguette With an 18.5% tip prepaid The reality was shockingly poor: On arrival, despite having a booking and prepaid package, my husband was left waiting a long time while staff fumbled around, not understanding what had been paid for. After 30 minutes, he was told he would be given a “surprise cigar” which turned out to be a cheaper one than advertised. Only when my husband questioned this did they reluctantly give him what I had originally paid for. Instead of the promised elegant terrace with private garden views, he was taken to a room made up like a fake beach with sand, nothing like what was sold. The included double Glenfiddich whisky was not served. Staff told him that the complimentary gin & tonic he was offered while waiting was “in place of it”. This is unacceptable, it was not what was purchased. Overall, the service was confused, disorganised, and deeply disappointing. I was horrified, as this was meant to be a thoughtful, memorable gift. Instead, it turned into a frustrating and embarrassing experience. If you are considering booking this, I strongly recommend you think twice. What was delivered bore little resemblance to what was advertised, and certainly not worth £80 + prepaid service charge.

A lot of money for British wallpaper! Trainee reception person 'greeted' us with a 'your room is not ready' (false), 'can I have a credit card to take the security deposit' and 'do you need help getting to your room'. The location and times for breakfast would have been helpful. The Wi-Fi password would have been helpful (could not locate it anywhere, had to ring Reception). Travel agent ordered double room and asked for twin beds. This was a mistake as the double room turned out to be so small you could not open even 1 suitcase in it. I was travelling with my teenage daughter and I could not see how we would stay in such small space. The wall was coming in halfway up the second window blocking half the view to make room for the next room. The hotel reception person did not get out of her way to help us: it was upgrade to King room (GBP 40 per night extra) or stay where you are. Kind of 'your mistake, nothing to do with us, you get what you get and you don't get upset'. The King room was barely bigger. Had to move the furniture to open the 2 suitcases on the floor. The wardrobe door could only open half way as it was hitting the room door bracket. We had included breakfast in the room reservation - very underwhelming for the price. Need to pay GBP4 for 2 waffles or 2 pancakes. Eggs on order come on top of dry toasted bread by default. There was no shower gel in the bathroom and we made a request for some at the front desk. Back in our room after breakfast, the room service person just barges in with a new bottle of shower gel without even knocking . Who does that!? There is an optional 'turn down' service where room service personnel prepare the room for the night. Sounds good except when someone knocks on your room door at 4.20pm to ask if you want them to shut the blinds and redo your bed. A tad early during UK summer when the sun is still up and shining in the afternoon. Just weird really! The hotel is old and probably not meant for so many guests. Floors have been divided into many small rooms with dividing walls blocking some of the original windows. The floorboards are creaking so much that you can hear guests walking up and down the long and narrow corridor that smells of mold. You can also hear the guests walking around their room on the floor above. At times I thought someone was coming into our room, that's how loud the sound was. The plumbing is not coping either. I have not found a sink which drains properly. Drainers have been removed or popped up to help the drainage, even in the lobby toilets. I found it very hard to get the water to anything other than boiling hot in the bath/shower (good luck stepping into the bath to take a shower if you have balance issues). The tap did not seem to respond when I turned it...
