There’s something very satisfying about sitting inside history, opposite a building full of history, while enjoying a good meal with a couple of beers.

The Museum Tavern apparently dates back to the 18th century, and was originally the Dog and Duck before an entrepreneurial owner adopted the current name when the British Museum opened across the street.

The interior still has an old-world charm: ornate fittings and windows. It was a nice and quiet atmosphere when I visited at lunch, even as lots of diners came and went efficiently while I was there.

Karl Marx apparently drank here after writing in the Reading Room next door, but that guy drank and stayed almost everywhere you go. I think he even worked at a Tesco Express for a while.

I started with one of the house Lagers and went with the Potted Devon Crab with dill butter, horseradish and served with some sourdough.

Later I got another beer and went with the — perfectly balanced with horseradish and with Barber’s 1833 cheddar and added bacon. It was rich and comforting, and would confess it was better than I thought it would be.

Both dishes I tried were good, and it was a nice place for sustenance and to sit and pass some time.

The menu also offers an "Invisible Mac & Cheese" - it isn’t a dish, but a nice way to make a donation to charity, which I was happy to do. Keep an eye out for it and if it is there, please consider doing the same.

The beer selection was solid, and the wine list respectable. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a proper lunch as it does for a casual drink.

I sat for a while, watched some Rugby League on my laptop and did some writing as the world passed by. It is a place that lets you do what great pubs do: relax, enjoy some time and space with some good food and booze as you remember that Karl Marx and you both probably drank too much.

Aptly named as a useful spot to drink while visiting family explore the British Museum across the street. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area, not too expensive and...

Nestled in the heart of London, just a stone's throw away from the iconic British Museum, the Museum Tavern stands as a testament to the city's rich historical tapestry. The pub's proximity to the British Museum and having a regular a notable regular (Karl Marx) adds an intriguing layer to its already captivating allure. Stepping into the Museum Tavern is akin to stepping into a time capsule, where history comes to life. The charming décor, complete with ornate details and polished wood, echoes an era long past. It's a fitting prelude to a visit to the nearby British Museum, serving as a haven where you can reflect on the artifacts and stories you've encountered.

The pub's unique connection to Karl Marx, who resided nearby, is a point of fascination. The echoes of his intellectual musings and the revolutionary spirit he embodied seem to linger in the air, making the Museum Tavern not just a place to enjoy a meal but a space where history and ideas converge.

Speaking of meals, the menu at the Museum Tavern offers a tantalizing array of traditional British dishes that cater to every palate. The extensive drinks menu is equally impressive, offering a selection that ranges from local ales to carefully curated wines.

The staff's friendly demeanor and warm hospitality are a hallmark of the pub, enhancing the overall experience. Whether you choose to sit by the window and watch the world go by or cozy up in a corner, the Museum Tavern offers an inviting atmosphere that beckons you to relax and soak in the surroundings.

For those seeking a harmonious blend of history, culture, and intellectual resonance, the Museum Tavern is a must-visit. It's a place where the threads of the past interweave with the present, creating a tapestry that's as engaging as it...

I went there today. Food was ok. The problem was they gave me the bill, the right bill mine but than charged me on the machine the bill from the table 12, i was on table 14. Than they stated they will do refund so i went to the bar to get the "refund" took ages. I asked for receipt and i was given a receipt that was not the amount that sould have been refund or my table, i pointed that to the man and he stated that he had done refund and if was any problem to email him. And i payed obvious my bill this time by cash the suposed right amont case i didnt trut putting my card again on the machine. So just got home went to check my bank statment and of course there is no refund so i payed my meal and some other guy. Never again. I hope the extra 12 pounds serve u well idiot. U should listen to you vostmers when they tell you that something is not right thanks for horrible experience.

12/8 still no refund and answer to your reply. Sr. you know me and my partner were not happy you rushed us out , and i mentioned the receipt you gave not even the table that you charged me. There are pub roasts, and then there are roasts. The kind that make you seriously consider cancelling the rest of your afternoon just so you can sit in a gravy-induced trance. That’s what we found last weekend at the Museum Tavern. We kicked things off with a couple of pints—lager and Guinness, obviously—because it’s Sunday and rules are rules. Starters were a pleasant surprise: a fresh, punchy feta salad and a salmon scotch egg that tasted like someone in the kitchen actually cares. Properly seasoned, nicely done—more “quality restaurant” than “random pub corner starter,” which is a rare and beautiful thing. Then came the roast beef. Tender, still blushing in the middle, and piled high with everything you want: grilled cabbage, sweet carrots, cheesy cauliflower (which deserves its own applause), roast potatoes that crunched properly, a flood of rich, savoury gravy—and yes, a Yorkshire pudding. Puffy, golden, and there like it belonged, not like it wandered in by accident. It was one of those meals that hits the sweet spot: comforting, well-executed, no fuss, no flops. We left happy, full, and just slightly more optimistic about life. A proper Sunday roast done right—and yes, worth the second pint.
