There’s something very satisfying about sitting inside history, opposite a building full of history, while enjoying a good meal with a couple of beers.
The Museum Tavern apparently dates back to the 18th century, and was originally the Dog and Duck before an entrepreneurial owner adopted the current name when the British Museum opened across the street.
The interior still has an old-world charm: ornate fittings and windows. It was a nice and quiet atmosphere when I visited at lunch, even as lots of diners came and went efficiently while I was there.
Karl Marx apparently drank here after writing in the Reading Room next door, but that guy drank and stayed almost everywhere you go. I think he even worked at a Tesco Express for a while.
I started with one of the house Lagers and went with the Potted Devon Crab with dill butter, horseradish and served with some sourdough.
Later I got another beer and went with the — perfectly balanced with horseradish and with Barber’s 1833 cheddar and added bacon. It was rich and comforting, and would confess it was better than I thought it would be.
Both dishes I tried were good, and it was a nice place for sustenance and to sit and pass some time.
The menu also offers an "Invisible Mac & Cheese" - it isn’t a dish, but a nice way to make a donation to charity, which I was happy to do. Keep an eye out for it and if it is there, please consider doing the same.
The beer selection was solid, and the wine list respectable. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a proper lunch as it does for a casual drink.
I sat for a while, watched some Rugby League on my laptop and did some writing as the world passed by. It is a place that lets you do what great pubs do: relax, enjoy some time and space with some good food and booze as you remember that Karl Marx and you both probably drank too much.
Aptly named as a useful spot to drink while visiting family explore the British Museum across the street. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area, not too expensive and...
