Ok. I’m all for giving a place a second chance, so I thought I’d return to Notting Hill Comic Exchange today, even though my last experience a month ago was less than impressive. After today though I realise why I shouldn’t have. I went in (around 12 / 12.30 pm) and had a brief look around - there was nothing of much interest and anything that was was way overpriced. Anyway after about five minutes the guy behind the counter suddenly announced out of no where that he was surprised to see me back. After I’d established that he was actually speaking to me, he launched into me, saying that he was surprised I’d bothered coming back after what I’d said about the shop the previous time I was in. I was so taken aback by his behaviour that I didn’t react much (I wish I had) and after another couple of awkward minutes I got out as quick as I could.
Once out I decided to look again at my previous review just to check what was so bad in what I’d said. On reflection I was perhaps a little harsh in my wording, but I certainly said nothing that wasn’t true or offensive in speech. Indeed my only harsh comments the previous time were really about the staff and their preoccupation with raving it up - maybe what I’d said hit a nerve! I definitely think the management should have a word with the guy who was serving in the shop today (about 12.15 pm) about his customer service skills (or lack of them) as his behaviour will only loose them customers.
Anyway nothing I’d said then or now could have warranted the way I was spoken to today. I have worked in retail for many years and if I treated customers like I’ve been treated, I wouldn’t be in a job for very long.
I won’t say more, other than this really is the last time I’ll be back. It a shame as over the years I have spent hundreds of pounds in the various Notting Hill Exchange shops. But unfortunately I won’t...
Read moreOne of the best 2nd hand comic shops in the UK. The selection is continuously churning, weekly and daily new stock arrives. A systematic approach to reducing prices on stock to shift it, means that bargains can be found in their 50p boxes but also that there is space for new arrivals.
The buyers are shrewd and knowledgeable, and know a gem when they get them in, and price accordingly. They will not negotiate on prices, and bear in mind, the individual working does not have authority to do so.
The staff are quiet and let browsers browse, but are pleasant and as mentioned, know their comics.
Call ahead if you are selling comics, to check a buyer is in, and you get a little more in trade than cash, but be realistic, it's a buyer's, instant payment market you walk into.
They have a glass case for more expensive comics, silver age, and as you can see a lot of comics.
They organise them well, but also have given sections by writer, Moore, Miller, Ennis etc for a few.
Manga, SF books, Commando comics, UK comics, silver age, bronze, modern, annuals, and comic packs fill the store. They have a large wall of graphic novels and there is much delight in finding something unexpected or new, or in many cases over the years, unknown to...
Read moreI live an hour away and was told I have to come in to have my comics valued and can't be done over the phone. Money was tight I took 10 graphic novels and headed to the store.
Upon arrival none of my comics weren't even properly looked at, he literally flicked through them and said £50 voucher or £25 cash. One of my comics ALONE was worth £60 - Star Wars Epic Collection Legacy Vol 2. I let him know this, he looked it up on the internet and said he'll offer £66 or £33 cash for all of them... Not worth it... Just shows they aren't bothered to look and valuate your comics/novels properly.
However I have to be fair and mention these guys do have a wicked collection of comics. I came here a couple months prior too and bought a few gems that you wouldn't find in Forbidden Planet or many other comic shops. Anywhere from classic to new comics you will find a great range...
