My first pint in this wonderful pub was in July 1969 it was a hot summers day, and we we had spent the afternoon watching and listening to a new Rock band who were one of the backup bands to the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park on that crazy day in 69 I was 19 and I, m now 71 and to date, I've never seen the Stones, but I did see a new band who were making their debut and that band was King Crimson, who blew us away with their Jazz/Rock and when we left Hyde Park we were headed to Nottinghill Gate to visit some friends, and we came upon The Sun in Splendour and we all traipsed in and I ordered 5 pints of Lager, and was charged £1 10/- yes you are seeing correctly, and that's £1.50p in todays money, and 50 years later in 2019 I was again in London and it was to see King Crimson at the Royal Albert Hall and the numbers were the same but different, I first saw them when I was 19 in 1969 and here I was going to see them again and I was 69 in 2019 and I visited the Sun in Splendour again for the second time in 50 years, and the only thing that had changed was the price of a pint of Lager, as it was now £4.90 a pint, and I was back there 3 weeks ago, and it's now become more of an eatery than a pub, which is just a sign of the times, the place was full, but I was able to get an Un-reserved seat for an hour, and I enjoyed my third pint of Lager in 50 years, and it was great to see the outside hasn't changed, and they still have the little...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis has to be a Yorkists' pub.
"Very early in the morning of Candlemas Day, 2 February 1461, Edward and his army came to Mortimerās Cross, which was ā and still is ā a hamlet of a few homes spanning a quiet crossroads between Ludlow and Leominster, in the midst of the Marcher territory once held by the Mortimers. On that morning a strange sight was to be seen in the sky above the astonished Yorkists ā three suns appeared on the firmament āand suddenly joined together in oneā. This is a rare phenomenon called a parhelion, or mock sun, which occurs when light is refracted through ice crystals. Such things were, of course, not understood in the fifteenth century, and the Yorkist soldiers wondered what it portended, some crying out in fright. But Edward proclaimed that it was an omen of victory, saying to his soldiers, āBeeth of good comfort and dreadeth not. This is a good sign for those three suns betokeneth the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, and therefore let us have a good heart, and in the name of Almighty God go we against our enemies!ā He also construed the sign as foretelling the joyful reunion of the three sons (suns) of York ā himself and his brothers George and Richard. At his words the entire Yorkist army sank to its knees in prayer, overawed by the vision. In time, Edward would incorporate those three suns into his personal badge, āThe Sun in...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe were truly offended by the way we were treated. I donāt know what went wrong with the team / owner, but my partner and his friends were attacked by them for no reason. This place is absolutely horrendous and if you stand for values, respect and good people, I urge you to pass by this place.
ā Replying to you, Mr De Silva here, as I do not want to skew the ratings by adding another review). This will be my final message. I stand on what I said, my husband and partners were attacked. With 100% no valid reason. If you had come and asked for them to be less loud or checked with the ladies whether they were annoying them, I would have 100% understood. They were waving flags and having fun with people, during the Jubilee weekend at 8pm, like any brits or people living in britain... I have raised the tone with you when you said my husband harrassed these ladies despite them saying they were having fun together. I was next to them so clearly I can confirm it was friendly banter during a reuniting event. But you insulted us, not the other way around and you chose the tough, wrong approach instead of a kind interaction. In my 5 years in london, I have only had positive encounters with people (in the many pubs iāve been to with my husband and his friend too) so i am sure we will find countless places that apply the policy of appropriate behavior both ways. Best...
