So, you’re wondering if Ultimate Performance is right for you or if it’s any good?
My boss and I were looking for an efficient way to kickstart our fitness given that the pandemic put quite a bit of weight on us. Fried chicken and movies were staples during those months! For myself, I’ve never been athletic and being in my 40s its been increasingly apparent that if I didn’t change my lifestyle this could have serious repercussions on my already declining health.
Having experienced other personal trainers at large franchise gyms, they always seem to have a level of disinterest in you (more interest in the shapely women) and some trainers seem to pick and choose their clients.
Doing my extensive research, UP seemed to be the best option. Yes, they are expensive, but you are guaranteed certain features you can’t get anywhere else. Firstly, the gym is only available to the personal trainers and their clients. This gives you a layer of privacy so if you’re like me and feel self conscious, this helps to mitigate some of that feeling. Secondly the personal trainers do more than just turn up to your session. They are there not only in the capacity to help you train but also in a holistic sense, giving you motivation, keeping you accountable and getting to know you so they can maximise your true potential. They don’t over-promise, but they can give you a realistic goal depending on your package.
So far at 9 weeks in, I’ve lost about 15kg, and I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without expert guidance. Sometimes you need to find someone who can find an efficient path to your goals and it’ll cost you but the results so far speak for themselves. I haven’t even completed my programme and still I have family members and friends who have noticed changes and are even inspired by it.
The staff are very friendly and over time get to know you, they get to see the changes in you too and give you encouragement. The gym is compact but is laid out efficiently so that a limited number of clients can access facilities. The locker rooms are kept clean and have basic showers and toilets so you can wash of all that exercise juice they extract out of your body!
Special mentions go to the two PTs who look after us, Dumitru and Vas, who through their patience and expertise have enabled such changes to our bodies and lifestyle. Especially Dumitru who through that immaculate award winning physique manages to use a silent form of psychology to make you do things you’ve never even thought was possible! 😂
Overall, if you have trouble starting a fitness regime, have self image issues, have a want and need to improve your health, UP is an efficient way to make those...

Questions I wanted answers to when I was deciding whether to sign up:
Does it work? Yes. 100%. See results below - so far, I’m still going!
Is it worth the money? Yes. It’s expensive, but you get what you pay for.
How does it work? Simple but all-encompassing. Nutrition, training, sleep, water, activity levels, supplements. Goal - put you into a calorie deficit and keep you there while you work on developing your lean body mass. Nutrition is key - eat like an athlete. No rabbit food though! Lots of protein - SO MUCH PROTEIN :)
How hands on are the PTs? Super hands on. You log everything vía the UP app. Your trainer sees all your logs and you chat to each other via the app. You decide to eat a Mars bar? Ok cool, you’re going to get a 👀 from your trainer…
Are the PTs nice? Yeah, maybe nice is the wrong word… I’ve dropped a lot of curse words in the UP gym the past 16 weeks! Joking aside, my trainer, Jamie, is just awesome. (Jamie, I know you’re reading this and getting a big head!) He supports me and pushes me incredibly hard. Harder than I would have ever pushed myself alone - because I would have assumed I couldn’t lift that weight or do that many reps. And he leans into my insane competitiveness when I want to lift the same weight as the large man next to me in the UP gym. Which I can now do. Cheers Jamie for enabling me :)
Would I do it again? I may have just signed up for another 18 sessions…
Do I need to have done weightlifting before? No. Your PT will teach you all the techniques (and - unlike CrossFit, which I’ve done - watch you like a hawk to make sure you don’t hurt yourself). If you have done weightlifting before, like I have, then it just means faster progression onto bigger weights.
What else should I know? If you want the results you see on the UP website, you’re going to have to push yourself hard, and push yourself consistently. Your PT can only match your effort and time commitment. Don’t sign up expecting magic to be done for you. To quote Paddy, the power is in your hands. And it is amazing - and addictive - when it does happen.
My results after apx 16 weeks:
Weight loss: -10.2kg (63.5kg to 53.3kg) Body fat % change: -14% (34% to 20%) Dress sizes lost: 3 (size 12 to small size 8) Energy and motivation: Off the charts Number of compliments from friends and family: I’ve lost track!
Sign up - you...

Location No regrets for signing up with UP Canary Wharf. It is situated where access to trains, tubes and other means of transportation is convenient. Right outside the gym, there are a lot of spaces to sit and relax after a tiring training.
Gym What can I say? State-of-the-art space with spacious training area, world class equipment - UP Canary has it. Their changing areas and shower rooms are well-maintained.
Programme After how many years of trialing different form of exercises and variety of diet plans, I never thought that a 16-week programme would change my life forever. The training was tailored to my goals, needs and abilities. As a fulltime employee working on shifting schedules including 12 hr day and night shifts, I was given the flexibility to ensure that I was meeting the goals set while not compromising my wellbeing. I was given all the tools necessary for me to track my diet, off-the-gym acitivities and progress.
Trainer and staff Excellent is an understatement to describe the staff. I am and forever grateful to the the whole team for the support and warm welcome in all my sessions in the gym. Special thank you to my personal trainer, Dumitru, who has been nothing but firm, supportive, professional and easy to work with. I never had any issue communicating with him for any concerns anytime. The first few weeks were so intense that I never thought I'd ever finish the programme yet Dumitru never failed to push me to my limits, to help me see and live with discipline, to encourage and assure that it will get better in time. As an introvert, I have always been uncomfortable going to a gym. In UP, there's no single session that I felt uncomfortable and demotivated. We trained with so much passion and with a good laugh and reassurance at the end of every session.
UP lives up to their promise. This is the best investment...
