Four Mountain Sports — Local services in Aspen

I hate giving one star to this spot but Mike Young gets all the credit! Nothing like being in the mountains excited about all the snow that’s dumping especially when you just made the hike from FL and then being disrespected by someone in the customer service business. I’m not a local, have a southern accent, but am quite knowledgeable about what I need to rent. I wasn’t asking silly questions or being disrespectful...it was 9am and I was just super excited for my first day on the slopes this season! I guess Mike didn’t like my enthusiasm and smile and figured he’d do his best to change it!?!?! You would expect better service in Aspen considering the demographics of the clientele. Newsflash Mike...everyone in that store was nice except you! It wasn’t just to me either. They were swamped, computers weren’t working, and the snow was falling. The customers are all giddy and just want the right equipment they are renting so they can enjoy their skication. Sometimes equipment breaks/malfunctions or just wasn’t right in the first place but it’s what they gave you. It only takes one run with tips/nose down to know whether it’s right or not if you are experienced. So after Mike was rude to me for no reason at all he was rude to some other skiers that just came from the mountain with a problem with the equipment they just rented. Mikes actions actually made me happy because I was pondering whether I did something to make him angry. I didn’t...he’s just poor at customer service! Normally I’d cause a scene and engage...and win but since we were in A$PEN I let it ride and just observed and it didn’t take long for him to be rude to another customer. I really enjoyed the K2 Mindbenders for 5 days in that thick powder! My toes and quads were worn out so I boarded the last 2 days on a Jones Twin. Their selection was limited on boards and ski boots which caused some pain (big toenail still black 9 days later) and stress (small boards get squirrelly) but I’m not going to elaborate on those issues. Firstly I’d like to state that they did have pretty good customer service, bare minimum at the cash register but the people working in the actual ski tune up section were cool. So overall customer service for me was 4/5, but I would also like to state that I payed for the “gold tune” and received my skis like they tuned it by looking at them and then saying “good enough” and handing them back to me. I don’t know if I messed them up when I was skiing groomers all day but I came home and noticed the same scratches on the bottom as when I put them in. Obviously this is coming from a person who has 1. Never tuned a ski, and 2. has gotten his skis waxed by machinery and tuned by one place. I expected it wouldn’t be perfect, the workers are only human but I still sorta expected them to not have scratches on the bottom when I received them. It’s totally my fault for not saying anything when I looked at them initially but still.overall I would rate the wax a 3/5, and the edge sharpening a 4/5(I didn’t notice anything wrong with it necessarily but it wasn’t a “perfect” job done) mid job but I will be going to another shop from now on, I’m sure they’re used to working with tourists all day and it can be annoying for them but still, I expect that they should be working as if they were their own...

After skiing I stopped by Four Mountain Sports as I had a problem with my boots and was not able to buckle them properly. I met with Dan Leuschel who everyone said was the “boot doctor”. He spent a great deal of time with me and made a few recommendations to me. My boots were not only too large on me, but were not meant to fit a narrow foot like mine. Not only was he very professional, but his knowledge was unmatched by any other ski personnel I have ever worked with. I have been skiing for many years so have met with many professionals.

Dan fit me with boots that were perfect for me and made a great deal of difference with my skiing. Never have any boots felt so comfortable and fit so well.

I would recommend Dan and Four Mountain Sports to anyone looking for boots and skis or need repairs. I will only go to Dan...
