When this theater is playing IMAX films full-screen in 2D (or even upconversions of non-IMAX films), it is the one of the best places a person can watch a movie on the planet. The screen is ridiculously gigantic, and the sound is out of this world. Seating is comfortable, and they keep the climate control just right. Seeing Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (30 minutes of IMAX), The Dark Knight Rises (70+ minutes of IMAX), Skyfall (upconversion), and Catching Fire (50 minutes IMAX) there were some of the finest filmgoing expereinces I've ever had.

Unfortunately, thanks to 3-D, I go there less and less these days. 3-D is general is not very good, but the 3-D on this screen just doesn't work because it's so big, and unless you're sitting directly center of the screen at the top of the auditorum, it just doesn't look very good and is a distraction.

Still, there are plenty of great 2-D IMAX films on the horizon and I look forward to spending hours in line to see them at the Bob Bullock IMAX. Hopefully they'll stick to more 2-D in the...

Overall a poor movie experience.

Movie supposedly starts at 3:30. To get any chance at a decent seat you need to at least be there an hour beforehand because it's all open seating. So we're sitting there for over an hour. Concession doesn't open til 2:45, then the terminals stopped working. Couldn't get snacks. That's okay because literally all they have is popcorn, main root (ew) drinks, and boxed candy.

Open seating means that people who got there late, especially in big groups are going to have to split up. This means families and thru children were just constantly running back and forth. Children with no supervision constantly being annoying during the movie. There's like 2 people irking the whole theatre so good luck getting an issue solved.

Seats were widely uncomfortable. Imax 3d glasses were dirty, sound was entirely meh

Was the size of the imax screen with it at all? He'll no. Go watch it at a normal imax...

  1. We bought our tickets for Avatar two weeks in advance but this cinema has no assigned seats so if somebody goes at the box office a couple of hours before the movie starts, he’s gonna get the same tickets + a great seat. So even if we booked in advance we had to take a seat at the very right side of the screen. No assigned seats also means that there will be a lot of odd seats: there is a chance that you will be separated from your partner because somebody else decided to leave just a seat between his group and another one. So you can decide either to stay without your partner or get the worst seats that nobody wants.
  2. It is winter now (40F outside) and the air conditioning was at the lowest possible temperature. My girlfriend was shivering with cold for the entire movie and so lots of other people did.

The only positive side (here’s why 2 stars) was the staff. Very friendly.

Overall,...

Great museum in downtown Austin! A great place to learn about Texas history and important events and people. We would advise to get your tickets online if possible so you can skip the lines. The museum is three stories and has a great mix of artifacts and displays. We also visited the IMAX theater and watched Despicable Me 4 and enjoyed the show! There is a cafe with a good selection of hot good and snacks. There is also a theater concession stand for traditional movie snacks to accompany your IMAX experience. The views and great outside and a great area to walk and discover our state capital.

A great place to spend a quiet weekend morning. Many IMAX options. The quick run time for these is ideal for those with short attention spans (both adults and children). Admission to the museum is not required for the theater. The parking garage is $15, so if you won’t be here all day, try to do metered street parking. The train exhibit was setup outside the paid entrance when we visited and the volunteers were very friendly and informative.

Visited for the first time back in July to watch Superpower Dogs and Wings Over Water. Both are really good documentaries. Recently watched Serengeti and Dinosaurs of Antarctica. Seating is first come, first serve. I was able to get a good seat since I went during the day. Concessions was closed when I visited. Since seating is first come, first serve, arrive early to get a good seat if you get tickets for a blockbuster film.
