I loved every second of this place. Perfect for the entire family. Takes a ferry boat to the banks and you can jump back to the departure every 30 minutes. Was 18$ for a round day trip for an adult. They request a time you plan to come back, we said 6pm as its the last ferry back, its easier for everyone if you say the last trip back vrs them worrying about you and not being back in time and delays the ferry waiting for you. You can always come back earlier. If your a hiker the ferry guides say the island is 7 miles, Google says 8.5-9 miles. Tons of conch shells and if your the 1st ferry ride to the banks I recommend you go straight all the way past the sand bank where they drop you off until you get to the water and go left til you are near the huge concrete water breaks because about a 1/2 mile to the left of the last concrete break is on the beach is where the beach is loaded with conch shells still intact and maybe a muscle still alive in it. Wild horses in small groups will be on the beach 1st in the morning in the same area. At least they were for us. We found an old tree where shells have holes and landed in the tree making it a shell tree where is a good spot to take pics n make sure u put one on a branch. Ferry boat guides are funny and take pics for the family photos. Very fun and like I said I loved every minute of it. I do recommend wearing hiking shoes/boots if your going inland to look at the horses mid-day as there's lots of little cactus. Another good time to go on the beach is noon as lots of ppl head back for lunch.. Bring bags to load up shells or buy a bag for $2.25 when you get tickets for the ferry. Very fun. Dont forget sunscreen. During covid when we went... Masks are to be worn on the ferry at all times but can be taken off once off the ferry. Beach does not...
Read moreBeautiful and peaceful hiking day. You can easily circumnavigate this island on foot. Several paths. will lead you across the center of the island and over dunes to the ocean. The horses on the island are familiar with people and do not appear to be frightened by your presence. We kept our dog on a leash and followed the rules of not interacting with the wild horses. If you are on the island at low tide, you will be fortunate to find many shells. As always, we leave them when they are inhabited. There are bathrooms available on the more populated side of the island. There is also a dock as well on the island and several people had arrived by boat. The ferry runs approximately every half an hour until 5:30 PM. This is a great place to put on your...
Read moreI wish I could give the crew more than 5 stars; they saved the day. My wife and I had such a wonderful time at Shackleford on Sunday that we decided to go again on Monday. Our Monday trip, however, had a rough start (the details of which I will spare you, but it was my mistake). When I notified the crew of the issue we were having, they could not have been more gracious and accommodating. They turned what was shaping up to be a nightmare of a trip into a wonderful 2nd day on the island. I wish I could recall the two crew member's names, but the ferry was named the...
