Enjoyed a casual, delicious lunch on a quiet January afternoon at Black Sheep restaurant on scenic Front Street in the historic waterfront district of Beaufort, North Carolina.

Walked in and immediately noticed the staff was friendly and actively engaged. I always consider a happy-looking staff to be a huge tip-off to how a restaurant experience will go overall.

Soup Special of the Day was a White Chicken Chili, and it was just what the doctor ordered on a deep winter afternoon.

Menu item that really caught my eye was a pizza I’ve had at Roberta’s in Brooklyn (and I think “invented” there, circa 2008 or so). It’s called…

Speckenwolf Pizza with Olive Oil, Speck Prosciutto, Red Onion, Mushrooms, and Ovalini Mozzarella

And it was terrific. See photos for all the tempting details!

Black Sheep says “We are a North Carolina scratch kitchen using fresh, seasonal, ingredients with a focus on quality, and creating one meal at a time.”

They sure lived up to it for our visit. Look forward to returning soon. Highly recommended.

P.S. As far as I know they are open year-round, and Hours (as listed as of January 2025) are: Monday closed Tuesday closed Wednesday 11:00am - 9:00pm Thursday 11:00am - 9:00pm Friday 11:00am - 9:00pm Saturday 11:00am - 9:00pm Sunday...

We have been eating here for years when we come out of state. While waiting for them to open, an apparent employee asked to pet our dog. Our dog was laying down peacefully with his eyes closed. Rather than speaking to our dog and approaching him slowly he simply came too fast and startled our dog. Our dog jumped up, barked at him and nipped him without breaking his skin. Our dog is very gentle and has never done this before. We moved our dog very near to us out of the way. Several minutes later a man came out and asked us to leave, which we did. Very disappointed this is the only solution to someone startling our dog. When you ask to pet someones dog the assumption is you know how to approach them when they are laying down peacefully. This is one of the few pet friendly places with shade in Beaufort. We're glad it was only a nip. We have always enjoyed eating here in the past. We never had a problem with people or servers approaching our dog here before. We went to Jacks on the waterfront in Morehead City the next day. Our dog laid peacefully in the middle of a crowded floor, a server immediately gave him some water, everyone either walked around him or stepped over him and we had a...

TL:DR- Waited an hour for a cold, overpriced pizza.

After my wife and I spend the morning on Shackleford we decided to get lunch before our hour drive home. We saw Black Sheep had pizza so we decided to get some. Since it was raining and most of the seats were filled the hostess told us that it would have to be a to go order and would take 30-40 minutes. We were hungry and decided to give it a go anyways. 40 minutes later we're sitting outside on a bench while it rained waiting for our pizza. 20 more minutes passed before I got the call saying our food was ready. At this point we just wanted to get the food, eat it, and leave because of how long it took to get food and we were burning time at this point. First thing we noticed was how small the pizza was. No bigger than a pizza from Blaze and twice the cost. Once we opened the box, the pizza looked delicious and took our slices only to realize that the pizza was cold. Clearly the pizza had sat out for some time before being boxed or no one realized it was done before giving us a call. I wish I could have some redeeming memories of Black Sheep but overall it was a negative experience and I would not recommend...

Black Sheep Pizza is a wonderful place for wood fired pizza on the waterfront in Beaufort. If you don't care for thin crust pizza they have a lot of other options including sandwiches, soup, and salads. They have an expansive drink list for liquor, wine, and beer. It's family friendly and has indoor and outdoor seating. The seating outside is wonderful. It's located on a boardwalk and across the water you may see some wild horses. The service is friendly and we were seated quickly (we ate around 1pm). Our waitress was great. She knew the menu well and had some great recommendations. She was also very patient with our children (we were in a group with five). We ordered the Pedro, Bishop, and Sausage and Pepper pizzas. Our least favorite of the three (which was still very good) was the sausage and pepper pizza. Our favorite was the Pedro. There's something about balsamic vinegar on pizza that you can't beat. The arugula on the Bishop was a great twist as well. You can expect to spend around $20 per pizza. We had five adults at our table and we ordered three pizzas which was about perfect for lunch. We enjoyed our time at Black Sheep Beaufort and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Black sheep was great. Don’t be disoriented if you walk in through their “secret entrance” someone will point you in the right direction. The place wasn’t packed but we had to get on a wait list and they told us 20-30 minutes but we were seated in like 15. They have like 3 sections in the restaurant, one section outside and the other two inside. One of those inside sections is a lounge area where you can wait and order drinks while you, as we did, wait for your tables. Once we sat down Parker gave us the rundown on all the specials and they all sounded and WERE delicious. Parker was very attentive to whatever we needed and explained the specials in such a way that we ordered all of them. First off we got the soup special. Imagine a “crab chowder” mixed with corn chowder it was sooo good. Next the Mac n Cheese special which was delicious and a good stepping stone to our figgy piggy pizza. I was skeptical because of the figgy part but Parker sold us on it and the pizza was soooo good. Good balance of sweetness and pizza. Overall it was a great experience. I do wish they would have a bit more beer selections but other than that I highly recommend this place for a bite.
