Backstreet Pub — Restaurant in Beaufort

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but the Backstreet Pub was probably the least impressive spot in Beaufort when we visited lately. When we entered, the bartender was outside chatting with her friends, and took her time coming inside. Immediately after we ordered our drinks, she was back outside with her friends. While she was not working, we sought out a seat outside. All of the biergarten seats were covered in water, despite it not raining in almost a full day. I would've dried them off myself, but the bartender was unavailable. So we decided to sit at one of their picnic tables. As my wife and I sat down, the table flipped with barely any weight, spilling our drinks. At this point we were done and went to the Royal James, and had a much better experience. While, part of the experience is down to poor luck, this could be remedied if the bartender showed more professionalism. I did like the look of the place though. The Back Street Pub hasn’t changed in over twenty years, thank Glob for that!

The bricks are still uneven, the vestigial bakery oven still rests in the corner like a Paleolithic artifact, and the flags above the bar are still fluttering stories only the regulars understand. The tree out back is the only thing that's grown, offering even more shade to an already perfect brick-lined yard.

What has stayed the same is the heart of the place: the people. The staff has always been friendly, and the current crew carries on that same easygoing, welcoming vibe. No pretense. No polish. Just a place where conversations are real, and time slows down.

LOVE this place! Great local bar. Wonderful bartenders every time I visit. Great beer selection. Warm fire when it's chilly. Interesting locals to hang with and get to know. Great location.
