The General Store — Local services in Beaufort

Editing my previous review from a 4-star to a 2-star. Granted this is a cute little store in the downtown Beaufort area. Great for tourists and locals for gifts. Wish they had more staple items since it's called a "general store" but still nice. Bonus-laundry in the back, only laundromat in beaufort. However the staff whom I believe is management or the owner has a terrible demeanor and zero customer service.

Interestingly enough, other reviews here that are negative have the owner responding stating they are a generational business with 32 years of tenure, but you wouldn't know it from some of the staff. God forbid you have a problem, you will be to blame. Maybe they have gotten complacent with their customer service since they have been there for so long.

Had a laundry issue today and wanted to let them know their dryer didn't work, and before she ever looked at it, she asked me if I put the money in the wrong area. What? When she went to look at it, she said "it's hot, when you have towels you have to run it twice." Maybe there should be a sign that says this? She literally said, "I'll help you this time, but not again" I wanted to tell her where she could put her quarters. I was pleasant respectful and then she told me to run it again. Hoping this lady was just having a bad morning I ran it again, to only have it be wet... Again. I'd admit and own it if my load was too large, but it wasn't. It was the same size that I put in the dryer next to it, and that one was dry, no problem.

Others have told me they experience the same thing and drive to Morehead for laundry to avoid the issues with the irritability the staff has. Guess I'm jumping on...

I recently visited The General Store , and unfortunately, my experience was far from pleasant. The store had a great selection of local souvenirs, apparel, ice cream, fudge and much more… but what truly stood out was the unwelcoming and prejudiced demeanor of the ONE staff, a manager I believe. I could sense an air of judgment as my partner (a Beaufort local) my daughter and I browsed through the aisles. We were asked if we wanted to place our items on the counter while we shopped, we kindly declined and continued shopping, we were then asked/ told to put our items at the front instead of carrying them around while we shopped like you normally would, no one else was asked to do so! It's disheartening to encounter such an atmosphere, especially in a place that thrives on tourism, where hospitality should be a priority. I won’t be returning, and I would not recommend this store to others looking for a positive...

This is an awesome little shop on the waterfront in historic Beaufort. The employees in the shop are all extremely nice and they had a nice assortment of clothing and accessories, along with some general household products. They also have hand-dipped ice cream and amazing fudge! There are some cozy benches on the front porch where you can sit and relax while enjoying your ice cream or fudging and watching the boats out on the water, and the passers-by on the street.
