I am very impressed by the State of Georgia's commitment to the preservation of pioneer gravesites. These original box tombs were on a hill, protected by a fence, facing the original plantation house about 100 yards the the southeast across Memorial Drive. As the site was graded for the Avondale Mall in 1964 those graves were preserved behind retaining walls of black granite blocks, giving the appearance of a large mausoleum. Being in a parking lot, there were several local nicknames for the gravesite ("tomb of the unknown shopper", "shop 'till you drop", etc.). I visited the site once, in 2002, to see this last parcel of the original 500-acre plantation established by James and Dorcas Crowley, now mostly known as Avondale Estates.
