Abbott's is awesome, I would happily give them six out of five stars if I could for the quality of their customer service and all-around buying experience. In all my visits to the store, I've found them to be a supremely helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and passionate bunch.
I am an amateur coin collector that's only started to take my coin collection seriously in the past few months. In that time, I've visited Abbott's five times dealing with Matt Abbott (one of the owners) and Andrew (an employee) and on each of those visits, I've been the recipient of extraordinary generosity, helpfulness and friendliness. On each of those occasions, in spite of being an obvious and indecisive amateur, Abbott's took their time to treat me as a valuable customer, providing me with invaluable advice, lessons and ideas. They really devote a lot of effort into making all their customers feel important, whether you're an amateur like me only able to spend $10-20 at one time or a professional coin collector spending hundreds per visit.
As I've said, on each of my trips to Abbott's, I've been the recipient of significant generosity and helpfulness. On my very first visit, they realized I was an amateur just getting started in the hobby and gave me a package of 2x2 sheets (10 sheets/package) that would normally cost $10 and hold 200 coins for free with my purchase. I was very grateful, especially considering I had only spent about $20 that time. On my second visit to the store, I wanted to buy an Eisenhower dollar and a Mercury dime, but when I went to pay, I noticed that I did not have enough money for both, so I chose the Ike dollar. Seeing that I was upset in having spent nearly an hour picking out both coins from their boxes and not being able to buy both, Andrew gave me a 1986 Kennedy half dollar as part of my change. I thought it was an excellent touch and once again, as an amateur, was very appreciative of getting my first Kennedy half dollar.
On my third trip to the store, I came late on a Monday wanting to buy plastic flips to store my coins, some plastic sheets to put them in and the 2016 Red Book. Unfortunately, Andrew doesn't work on Mondays and Matt was not sure how much the plastic flips were sold for, so he apologized and gave me 50 of them for free and since they were sold out of the 2016 version of the Red Book, he gave me the 2015 version for only $3 (normally $12-15). Yet again I found myself being deeply appreciative of their help and generosity. My fourth visit was also on a Monday, once again trying to buy plastic flips, however I forgot that Andrew was not available and so had run into the same situation with Matt. I offered to buy the plastic flips for $0.10 each (more than Birmingham's $0.08) since I was more desperate this time to get more than 50 of them. Matt saw my desperation and gave me 100 for free!
On my fifth and last trip to Abbott's, I wanted to buy a grading guide. I got to the store late because of work and was comparing the Photograde book with the 6th edition of the ANA Guiding Standards. Matt let me stay 20 minutes after they had already closed at 6:00 comparing the two. Seeing that I (as an amateur) was having difficulty deciding which one to buy, he told me to take both home for free and spend a week or two deciding which one to purchase. I asked him why he would trust someone to return the books and he said that it is simply the way they operate. It is for this reason that I feel compelled to write this review. Abbott's is a coin shop that trusts people, helps people, is friendly, shares their knowledge and passion, and hopes for all that in return as well.
I most definitely will be returning with the books and many more times to buy from them again. I look forward to going there each time to buy a new coin or coin supplies. As I said, I would happily give them six out of five stars if I could, but for now, I'll settle on giving them a 5/5 and an MS70 grade for...
Read moreI would have given this place -10 stars back in the day…. My family has been going to Abbott’s for years however the last 2 years that I have been there, I’ve been yelled at, called fat, been blamed of swearing when I did no such thing. The owner told me he was going to scrap all my grandmothers jewelry and sell the gold cause I couldn’t get to the store due to 4 members of my immediate family passing away from Covid and cancer. He even mocked me in a high pitch voice saying, “that’s my grandmothers jewelry” I was mortified to say the least. Little did he know that my grandmother had raised me so this jewelry that he was going to scrap was the memories of her. She passed away a year ago today.
I told him I could not wait to write a review about his customer service, which then he told me he was going to sue me. The jewelry had been there for 7 months, yet he kept yelling it had been there for a year. He also told me before they sent my jewelry over to be resizes the cost was going to be $265, then I got there today they told me the cost was $575! Please do yourselves a favor and never go to this place for anything, they try to rip you off, insult you, tell you that you are being watched by cameras, like I didn’t know that,...
Read moreI went into Abbott's yesterday as a new collector, I was looking for advise on what to look for when collecting. I did like to collect wheat backed pennies. What I was looking for was advise on what years are best to collect, what were some errors to look for and how to spot them, etc. I brought in a few coins to show what I was interested in. I was told Andrew was the person to talk to. After a 40 minute drive I arrived excited. Andrew looked over a few of the coins I brought and showed no interest in what I had. Just starting saying what each one was worth, couple cents here couple cents there. I wasn't looking to sell. I was trying to find out is IF what I was collecting was it worth it for me to collect. What to look for when collecting these coins etc. What I got was discouraged. I left there feeling like I should just throw away the trash I have collected and stop collecting coins all together. So if you want to get discouraged out of collecting stop by Abbott's. Let Andrew talk you out of what you thought you liked to do. It is VERY hard to find honest advise out here about collecting coins but after stopping by Abbott's I really think Im not going to collect coins anymore. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!...
