I was seven years old when I drowned in a river behind our house. There was no great panic or sudden realization — just a shift. One moment submerged. The next, I was standing on the riverbank. Alone. I looked out toward the water and saw a pale shimmer dancing across its surface. I assumed it was the moon.

But when I looked up, there was no moon.

Only darkness. And stars.

When I looked back down, the river was still and black. That’s when I saw it: a figure, not floating, but hovering — maybe three or four inches above the water. The air vibrated around me. I felt every part of myself expanding and collapsing at once.

The figure moved closer, silently. As it came into view, I recognized the face. It was Colter Dimas.

His expression was unchanged. Ageless. But his body looked like it had carried centuries. Skin like weathered stone. Eyes like sleep. I didn’t understand what it meant. I still don’t.

And then, I was back. Alive. Lying on the riverbank, coughing up silence. No one saw it happen. I never told anyone. But it’s never left me.

Now, some days, I walk past Alden + Rose, the little shop his wife runs. I’ll pause and glance through the window, just to see if he’s there — behind the counter or in the back, sweeping or folding something simple.

If he’s there, I’ll wait. Just until he looks up.

He always does.

And when he gives me that look — the same one he gave me on the river — I just nod and walk away.

He knows I remember.
