Went for the first time on 08/07/22 and the workers (closing shift) were very friendly and helpful! I didn’t get the workers names, but they definitely deserve recognition for their great work :) They were super patient with a customer who was being unnecessarily rude towards them while they were being very polite, professional, and following the stores closing protocol.
The store itself is HUGE! Despite reading the reviews and seeing pictures beforehand, it is still way bigger than I expected!
The fabrics are all 50% off what they are marked; this makes some very inexpensive and others on par with what you can find at traditional stores. However, the vast selection alone makes the trip worth it! I especially enjoyed the large selection of wool, vinyl, marine vinyl, velvet, denim, etc. that are usually harder to find, especially so many choices of each.
In addition to fabric, they have a large selection of trims, barrels of buttons (10¢ each), inexpensive thread, and many other notions I didn’t get the chance to look at. There are racks and barrels full of leather in which I found everything from browns, black, blue, grays, and even some with fur.
Despite everyone saying to go with a clear idea of what you want, this place is great to walk around and let the endless amount of fabric inspire your next project!
At SR Harris, you select your fabrics and bring them up to the front to a huge table where you measure and cut them yourself as long as it’s 5 yards or less (anything over, the employees will help you at a special table). There are orange stickers in which you write the amount and price. The yard sticks are clearly marked for common cuts (1/4th, 2/3rds, 5/8ths, etc.) which I found very helpful.
*A few things that would have been helpful, especially as a first time customer, would be:
•A sign near the entrance clearly going over the store procedures (pricing, picking your fabric and cutting/labeling it). I am still unsure what the procedure is for fabric too high to reach, in the bottom of a giant stack, or just very very large/heavy rolls.
•A store map/directory. I have no idea if there is any order to the store (what type of fabric is in what section). Some fabric types seemed to be confined to one area and other types I saw grouped together but in various spots in what seemed to be random aisles.
•A scale near the leather barrels or a sign stating where there is a scale located (I am unsure if there is one elsewhere for customer use but I did not see any) since it is sold by weight.
Overall, I had a great experience and will definitely be back many more times. Glad I found...
Read moreThis was my first time at your store. I asked your staff member to show me where your genuine leather is. she pointed to the shelf. Where I found this white and gold patten fabric. thinking it was leather. After paying $150 for 22 Sf = three yards, when I got home to show my in laws from Asia, they laughed at me, because they told me about this cheap fake leather. My in-laws make handbags for a living. They are here visiting us. My brother-in-law was going to show me how to make a handbag by hand. He told me this is the cheap fake leather they have in Asia. He told me he would go back to the store with me and exchange it for genuine leather. He said genuine leather would not have gold paint on it. This was a thick material. This is like a vinyl with backing. Leather is thin and one color. When I looked at the receipt it said no refund. This is unfair. We scan the image in google, this is a vinyl that sold online for $9.00 a yard online. Your company sold me a cheap vinyl for $50.00 a yard. I first want to correct my statement. They sold me this fake leather by the sq. foot twenty-two sq . = most 3 yards. The sale associate did not cut this. It was rolled up in a brown bin next to a shelf by the woman bathroom. Your sale rep. did not cut the item. She just told me it was leather, and it was sold by the herd. So, it sold by sq. feet. The item rang up for a $150. I questioned the price two times, but the Asian staff member confirmed it was leather. But I have been laughed at by my family members because it is fake leather. Google has confirmed this is not genuine leather, that you sold me. I do not want to give the item back; I just want a refund of the over price your company sold...
Read moreSR Harris may not have desired to inherit the crowd left in the wake of Joann Fabrics’ doors closing for good. Alas, they have, and my hope is that anyone would be appreciative of business especially in the face of the textile industry’s current state. As you can see from the 500+ reviews on here, folks clearly love an incredible and unique selection. I would have to disagree with the Star Tribune’s assessment of SR Harris being a sewer’s Disney Land. Because at Disney Land, you are welcomed and your dollars are catered. On our recent trip to SR Harris, we were scolded for cutting our own fabric, though signage was not easily found and help was not readily accessible to explain the process for these infrequent shoppers. The pricing also seemed significantly higher in this post-Joann world, so I would also have to disagree with the steep discounts touted by the Strib. Finally, when we were jaw dropped surprised by the price of our purchase (our mistake, admittedly), we were met with the demand to purchase after cutting it. Again, this signage was not something we had readily seen. Instead of letting us have an opportunity to discuss and understand, we were again met with a very pushy staff member who insisted the store policy trumped our need to breathe and review our options. We did end up purchasing and felt sick about the price and the way we were treated. Again, SR, maybe you don’t want us former Joann types. It sure appears that way. But, hey, the batik collection is...
