EF Language Abroad — Local services in Cambridge

EF Tokyo was a fantastic experience. The teachers were, by far, the best part. They were amazing and helped me learn so much! The location was fantastic, as it was right in Shibuya. My host family was great and despite having to commute a long ways to school, the location of their home was also amazing. These things made it worth the money. The reason I couldn't give the experience five stars is not because of EF Tokyo. I think that there are some miscommunications between branches and as well as with its headquarters. Some things were frustrating and I know that I had a much better experience than some of my friends that had issues with the management of the company as a whole. That being said, I would highly recommend going to EF to learn Japanese. The approach is more focused on verbal communication (they use Marugoto, which is more focused on conversational Japanese in its early textbooks). To make the most of the experience, I would recommend having some sort of foundation for the language prior to entering the program. For example, I think that knowing some basic grammar and hiragana and katakana would help students exponentially. Once the foundation is set, it is much easier to learn at the pace the courses are set at. My friends who were total beginners coming into the school had issues keeping up with the pace and having the information stick. In addition, I recommend staying for at least one cycle (six weeks) to really improve your language skills. Again, my teachers were fantastic and I cannot sing their praises enough. They were very attentive and always willing to help, give more practice when asked for it, and so forth.
