I received unsettling, unprofessional, and demeaning treatment from the ER male nursing staff during my recent visit to the emergency room here. The all male nursing staff I encountered upon being taken by ambulance to the ER, displayed a complete disregard for my dignity and basic human needs. At one point, I requested to use the bathroom, but my request was denied. As a result, I was forced to wet myself, a humiliating experience that made me feel dehumanized. And I had no change of clothes. They put a gown on me but to take a lift back to my car I would have had to wear stinky, urine soaked pants. They said my need to use the bathroom was not important. It was not a priority. The situation worsened . After the incident, when they inserted a device to assist with urination, one of the male nurses made an inappropriate comment, telling me to “just give it a little squirt,” which was not only unhelpful but offensive, considering I am female and the comment makes no sense for my anatomy.
The situation escalated when he instructed me to spread my legs to put that device in. I was on a exam table as narrow as a gurney, and he had laid my purse beside my legs so there was no room to comply. Even though I had asked that it be set on the chair with my other things. So there was no room to spread my legs. One of the male nurses laid a stack of paperwork directly on my legs as if I was some inanimate object. I asked him to please take his paperwork off my legs.Throughout this ordeal, I was subjected to a barrage of belittling comments and I had to answer questions over and over as they refused to listen to anything I said, though I was answering THEIR questions. For instance, after clearly explaining my symptoms, including extreme exhaustion, one of the male nurses asked me whether I had experienced any tiredness. I said, well extreme exhaustion would be tiredness. I was clearly not taken seriously as a patient because I was a woman.
Inappropriate, behavior continued but from another male nurse after I was admitted to the hospital. He stood in my room in the dark, staring at me from a distance without explanation. When I asked why he was there, he responded, “I’m here to make sure you don’t hurt yourself.”
The male doctor on duty in the ER provided excellent care, but I feel the hospital is tolerating and not correcting the behavior of these particular male nurses due to them being males. I cannot help but feel that, had female nurses acted in such a manner, their behavior would have been addressed and corrected.
I do not think patients, particularly female patients, should have to endure such...
Read moreThis was one of the most unhelpful ER experiences I have ever had. The Receptionist was so unbelievably passive aggressive in every encounter I had with her. She would ask me a question and as I was in the middle of answering she would assume she knew the rest of what I was going to say and moved on to the next question. Moving on to the nurse, she had a student following her which she seemed way too concerned about rather than her patients. I was apprehensive on having a student start my IV and she seemed to brush my concerns to the side and had him do it. He struggled putting in the needle and when he finally did, something was overlooked because blood started pouring out all over me, the chair, and the floor. When my lab work came back and they told me I was dehydrated, I had to ask them twice to start a saline bag on me. Though I was in extreme pain, I did not go to the er for pain meds, I went in to make sure I had nothing life threatening but before I even seen the dr or had any other scans or labs done they shot me full of morphine. I personally do not like having morphine before seeing the dr because I can no longer cognitively talk to them about my symptoms and I felt they just gave me the shot to shut me up. When I went into my CT scan, the man who put me on the bed instructed me TO LOWER MY PANT AND UNDERWEAR past my waist. I had to ASK him to give me a sheet AND to turn around. He was uncomfortably close and very weird about the whole thing. I have never been asked to reposition my clothing during a CT scan and I’ve had more than most people. It was a very unsettling few moments. I tried to crack a few jokes to make myself more comfortable with the whole thing and he still was so awkward. At the end of this all, I left in pain was given no antibiotics or pain medication to help me push past this and to get back to work quicker. I had to return to a different er a few days later because the pain was still there and I was worried there was something life threatening. I went to Baylor Scott&White and there was given a proper screening and left feeling heard, seen, understood and with a clear understanding with what I was dealing with. I never felt heard at Cedar Park, in fact I felt like I was an annoyance and a waste of time. If they would have given me just half the attention Baylor Scott&White did, I would be back at work today. Please do not go here or bring your loved ones here if you think it’s a true emergency. I will omit the pictures I took because they are a little bloody and I know some won’t want...
Read moreUpdated post: Below is my experience that I had months ago. However, I would like to highlight the two experiences that I had yesterday and this evening. After having such a bad experience months ago, I was skeptical about coming to this hospital for any medical treatment. I spoke to the supervisor over the ER named David and he reassured me that if I came back to the hospital, my experience would be much better. He didn’t lie or disappoint at all. Yesterday was my first time back at this hospital since my horrible visit. The physician treated me like I was a person as well as treated me for my symptoms. Elizabeth was my nurse and she is an excellent nurse. I had to return to the hospital the following day, due to pain and vomiting. The ER doctor that was rude and nasty to me, happened to be here tonight. I requested from my nurse that he not be my physician. My nurse immediately took care of it for me to make sure that my wishes were honored. The physician also was great and treated me. Luke was my nurse tonight and he was great. I don’t remember the physicians names but I was highly impressed and wanted the last two visits!
Post below from my horrible experience that I posted 3 months ago: The ER doctors were very rude to me and condescending! I had to constantly go to the ER due to a chronic medical condition that I have and I wasn’t able to get a doctors appointment with my specialist until the end of September. So my only option was to go to the ER. The ER physician told my husband and I that he wouldn’t treat me with nausea or pain medication because I he had seen me twice. I JUST NEEDED TO FOLLOW UP WITH THE SPECIALIST. Which I wish it was that easy, I wouldn’t have had to go to the ER and rack up multiple bills. He also put in my chart for the doctors not to treat me with pain or nausea medication. I then went to a different hospital 5 days later and was admitted for 5 days due to a serious health concern that Cedar Park Medical Center wouldn’t even take the time to help me or treat me. I was treated as if I was a person off the street! The nurses there were very nice and were concerned about my health issues and me not being treated properly as well as apologetic. But the doctors could care less. Thank God for the doctors and nurses at the other hospital that were willing to treat me, instead of ignoring my medical needs! As well as putting false and derogatory information in my chart. And got mad when I told him that we would just go somewhere else and wanted me to sign a “Refusal to consent to...
