March 9,2024 My first time here, when I arrived the manager greeted me. Very pleasant. Confirmed understood what I wanted. Of course because I have shorter hair in the back it was explained how this can happen but it would be a price difference. I did t mind because I was elated to get my hair braided. In fact I paid UPFRONT (which I know now is a no no) . The salon manager Meta introduced me to my First Braider ,Melissa. Who started the front, of my hair. I noticed my hair was coming out the braids- I asked about it how to fix it, she asked if we can cut it! Ugh no ma'am we cannot . 🤮 disgusted. I then reiterated to her the front looked gappy and I need to be able to put them in a high ponytail . She agreed and said they could. Knotless braids looks like a railroad track in the front of my hair Switch: now a Second Braider comes starts the back of my hair. Now I will say she caught every thought !very pleased at the work she performed in the back. I was feeling like yes I’m outta here shortly . Half way in SHE stops and says MAAM Im going to eat. The night progresses I made mention the the front of my hair isn’t satisfying - her response- that’s how we do KNOTLESS. 😔 So my 4 hour appointment that started at 6pm turns into 6 1/2hours leaving at 12:53am And STILL HAVE TO GO BACK ON THURSDAY SO MY FRONT can get fixed! Attitude of the Braider #2 was horrible Total waste of šŸ’° money!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND these 2 Braider’s not certain about everyone else. I’m just frustrated with the whole process!

4/8/23… last 4 pics on human hair braids…Yes I went back… just love Melanie’s work..this time I used human hair for micros.. next time I will use previous hair she recommended when 1st got my hair done.. The only place for me… Ok, what I am about to post is not a bashing on Givens Hair, they are great, friendly & very professional. I returned to let Melanie do my tree braids since my last braids. I went on 8/08. OMG, my braids were gorgeous, I was so happy my hair grew for her to do tree braids. I left a satisfied customer. But when I got home I felt how tight they were.. I sprayed, oiled, wet my hair for a week, nothing seems to work, took ecederin everyday, still nothing! Update: made my appt for 1/27 with Mel, well Judy & Mel did not disappoint.. love my braids. It had been since 2022 since I last visited, so glad I did.. I so recommend Givens, have not visited one in Concord, I always go to Charlotte. The last 3 pics with gray color is the updated pics. On 8/13, I absolutely could not take it anymore, I took them out, my scalp is very sore. If I get braids again I think I will stick with micros or try knotless. Yes I do highly recommend this business, just tree braids were not for me at this time. My hair probably needs to grow more before I go this route again, and I will.

Sloppy work, braids were already looking raggedy within a week. First red flag was my appointment being scheduled for 4pm and it took them 45 minutes to get started on my hair. So I just sat for that long time before I was put in a chair to get my hair started. I had Meta as the braider and some other lady helped her when it was almost done. Meta did a few rows of braids and stopped and went to do a lady’s hair that was sitting next to me. So I was just sitting there until she came back over to me and another lady came to help. It just seemed unorganized. She didn’t even cleanup the braids at the end and didn’t cut off the pieces of hair that were sticking out from her sloppy work. I had to do that myself when I got home because it looked horrible. Braids are already matted and looking a mess after a week. Some of the boho pieces appear to just be knotted and tied onto the braids. Just a hot mess! So many braids have slipped out of my head within the first week. I paid $320 for butt length boho knotless & I hate my hair after a week. I did see other girls getting their hair done & it looked decent so maybe I just didn’t get the best braider there. I wouldn’t book Meta, she sat on facetime with someone 90% of the appointment. Very unprofessional and sloppy work!

I absolutely love my hair—the boho knotless braids are stunning and exactly the look I wanted! The braiding itself was beautifully done, and I’ve gotten so many compliments.

That being said, the process took 8 hours instead of the 5 hours listed on the booking site. A bulk of the time was spent prepping the hair bundles and regular braid hair, which definitely extended the appointment. Ideally, if there was a dedicated person to prep hair before and during the service, the braiding process could move much faster. The braider stopped multiple times for 30-45 minutes each time just to prep hair, which took away from the overall experience.

Another thing to note—setting an appointment isn’t really setting an appointment. Everyone is treated as a walk-in. I booked an 8 AM appointment, but when I arrived a few minutes early, other people were already being serviced. No hair was prepped in advance, and while I was seated quickly, it didn’t feel like a true appointment-based system. This is something to keep in mind for anyone expecting a structured booking process.

From their Instagram, I expected a more Americanized African braiding experience, but it was similar to traditional African braid shops, with stylists speaking French the entire time while working. While I understand that English may not be their first language, it can feel rude and uncomfortable when customers are excluded from conversations—especially when stylists point and discuss pricing or other things in their language. Clear communication is important, and making an effort to engage customers in English during those moments would improve the experience.

I also usually have two people braiding at once, which would have sped up the process. One thing to note—while the front of my hair was given great attention to detail, the back braids weren’t as carefully finished (e.g., less trimming of split ends).

šŸ’° Price-wise, I paid over $400, which feels a little steep, so I really hope this style lasts a long time and proves to be worth the investment.

āœ… Would I recommend? Yes.

āš ļø Room for improvement: Time management, customer communication, a true appointment-based system, and ensuring consistency in braid finishing...

I’m truly disgusted by the way I was treated today. I have never felt so degraded in my life.

After sitting in the chair for hours, I noticed my part was extremely crooked. I kindly brought it to the braider’s attention—her name was Mel—and asked if we could do the easiest fix possible. Instead of professionalism or care, she sucked her teeth, yelled in a language I didn’t understand, and stormed off.

Confused and uncomfortable, I asked another woman in the salon what was going on. She explained that Mel ā€œwas ready to goā€ and that I’d need to come back another day. I told her I couldn’t return and was only asking for a simple correction.

Then it got scary. Mel came back screaming with scissors in her hand, proceeding to aggressively grab at my hair as if she was about to cut it out. I was in shock. I calmly explained I was still willing to pay—because I’m also a service provider, and I believe in respecting people’s time—but I didn’t understand why it escalated like this.

I thank God for a kind older woman named Mama, who stepped in, looked at my hair, and confirmed it was crooked. She spoke up to Mel and told her it needed to be fixed. If Mama hadn’t been there, I honestly don’t know what would’ve happened. That’s terrifying.

I cried the rest of the appointment. I was alone, surrounded by women who only spoke to each other in a language I didn’t understand, feeling unsafe and humiliated. Mel tried to hand me a coupon afterward, but I just wanted to leave.

I don’t wish this experience on anyone. I’m grateful for Mama—she was truly a blessing. But this was hands down one of the worst, scariest customer service experiences I’ve ever had. I’m paying over $300 for a service & brought extra money to tip because that’s the type of person I am!...
