City Barbeque — Restaurant in Charlotte

Me and my girlfriend went to Charlotte to meet up with a guy to do some guitar trading. I decided to go a few hours early and explore Charlotte a little. We got to there, went to a few stores and then decided to go get something to eat. Did a quick Google search and saw that right around the corner was a place called City Barbeque. Being from High Point (15 minutes from the barbeque capital of the world, Lexington, NC) I love barbeque. So, City Barbeque it is...

We walked into what looked like a normal shopping mall restaurant to see that the place had been a little "countrified". Cool old pictures and artwork hung from the walls. Nice old 30's and 40's Soul blues playing across the speakers... It was cool! Kinda took you back to what a barbeque restaurant would've been like in the good ol' days!

We were greeted at the door by a very nice young lady who introduced herself and us to the restaurant. We headed to the counter. We placed our order... Barbeque chef salad, a Turkey Chef Salad and a couple drinks! The price was a touch higher than I expected, but if it was good, WHO CARES! The cashier was very pleasant and courteous. We got to the end of the counter and one salad was ready and they informed us that the Turkey wasn't finished cooking yet. They asked if we would mind waiting for a few minutes. We said sure... Within a couple minutes, the cashier came back to us and said that the turkey still wasn't ready and asked if my girlfriend would like another type of meat at no additional cost. She chose the brisket. Some people would see this as a negative thing! I don't! I see it as that they were nice enough to not have us wait around forever or serve us something that wasn't presentable. I whole-heartedly appreciate them doing so!

The food came out and was totally delish! They have a little condiment buffet in the corner with numerous hot sauces and barbeque sauces that were delicious! All the fixings on the bar were fresh and scrumptious! The atmosphere was incredible, the food delicious, and the people were all totally nice! I like that, especially in this day and time where you nearly feel like trash when ordering a burger at the local fast food chain. You usually get some bratty 16 year old that hates the world, and YOU for ordering! City Barbeque was a breath of fresh air! I saw a sign that said something about them having t-shirts and I thought, "This was such a pleasant surprise, and I'd like to advertise their business with wearing one of their t-shirts"! I asked the cashier if they had a 3XL shirt that I could buy. She talked to the manager (or owner, I'm not sure) and he said that he would check to see if they had my size. He finally found me one and let's just say that I've worn that shirt NUMEROUS times within the last 2 weeks!

So, if you're in Charlotte and want a fantastic lunch or dinner, give City Barbeque a try! My experience was incredible, and I will be stopping back by there in a week or so to dine in again! Thank you City...

Update to 3 stars: I was contacted by a manager who apologized and offered a credit for us to try again. We visited again April 11th, and ordered the chipotle sandwiches and the Nashville hot chicken. Both were excellent. We didn't have any issues as the store was not busy, but I went in and ordered so I can't speak to the curbside service this time, since you can't order online and pay with rewards, which was a little frustrating. Also, I ordered 2 chipotle sandwiches, but they are placed in the same tray so one person ate both and we thought the store had left one off, which was annoying. Overall, a much better experience, we will probably eat here again, as my husband loved the sandwiches, we will just be aware of the sandwich and curbside issues in the future.

1 star - This was our first and last visit.. I ordered online for curbside and it said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived, checked in through the link and waited. And waited. And waited. I called and told them I was there, and she asked for my name, which I gave and she said they would be right out. So I waited. And waited. And waited. At this point I just wanted a refund and another restaurant. After 30 minutes, my husband went inside and she asked for the name. He told her and she then proceeded to START putting the sides in cups. An hour after my order, my husband got a bag of food. When he got outside, I found that items were missing, so he went back in and waited 10 more minutes for that. The hush puppies were stellar but everything else was just OK, not worth the hassle. Don't offer curbside if you can't deliver on...

May 25th 2024 almost a year to date that I did my last review. I don't know what happened. I guess I never went on the weekend. But this place is kind of messy. The bathroom has an odor of marijuana. The employees don't smile that much anymore. And I got a salty pulled pork sandwich that had too many spices on it. Take a pic of the picture. Instead of calling out names, they just say dine in. What happened to that gentleman I saw always a few weeks ago running around and kept this place clean? Oh by the way I didn't get a chance after spending time setting up my City BBQ account to use it at the register because, I never saw the pop-up for the screen or ask about it. I guess I have to drive to Huntersville. After all this place, was the last place in University area that I will eat at. But I can't even finish the sandwich. Also the collard greens, weren't the same. I think the pork they use was used from yesterday because it felt hard and not soft. Nor did it taste flavorful. Hey I'm not saying but we does change your taste buds especially if you're cooking. So here I am going to walk away from the table still hungry. This is a first for me at this place!! 🤬
