Paper Skyscraper isn't in a skyscraper and isn't made of paper. Rather, it's a gift/travel/greeting card store known for an extraordinarily broad collection of unique items from unusual books about travel, to unique cook and barware, to birthday and other wry greeting cards, and much, much, much, much more. It is Charlotte's most exceptional store, now under new ownership after the original founders sold in order to retire. My visit yesterday confirmed generally that the promise of continuing the founders' buying style seems to be holding. Best quirky gift shop in Charlotte. Wonderful mix of hand crafted and commercial merchandise, and everything has an edge. Best greeting card selection in NC, though they separate cards into different displays throughout the store which is annoying. The place to go for irreverent cards, in particular, but not limited to that. Wonderful, though smallish, selection of books. Owners - and their dog - are always around and can answer any questions. They do their own buying and they have a wonderful eye for smart, urbane, trendy, humorous, and thoughtful items. Nothing kitchy, everything clever. My son was in the hospital and I decided to stop here to get him a little get well gift and a gift for my daughter who was home being a big girl while we were away. Little did I know, they had the cutest toys and books ever! I bought my son (3 years old) music instruments and it kept him so entertained in his hospital bed. And for my two year old, I got her a sketch book and the coolest crayons/markers ever. I also got my mom a really cute "thank you" card.
