I'm so glad to see that a few owner/operated Ace Hardware stores are still in business. Wal-Mart, Lowe's, etc. have killed local hardware across the United States. I'm not much of a handy-man and I don't have to be living in a unit in a highrise. However, there are times when I need drano, floor treatment, lights, paint, a few tools, potting soil, a fawcett, the guts to a toilet tank, household cleaners, brooms, mops, etc. As soon as you walk in that door there is someone to help guide you. I'm looking for the paint department. He/she doesn't point, they bring you over to paint and introduce you to the paint technician who immediately and sincerely asks how are you and how can that person help. The last time I walked into Ace, I went to the paint department and was poring over god knows how many color samples trying to match my living room color. I finally asked the paint tech if she could recommend anything close to the color of the paint chip I was holding in my hand. I had no idea colors could be matched and custom mixed. That paint was perfect. Still don't know how they do that. The employees are always happy to help trouble shoot a problem I'm having. They tell me what parts I need, how it needs to be done and how long it should take me. I swear I love those employees because they have expertise with authority. I've never been made to feel dumb although I know I've asked some pretty dumb questions. In summary, here are my reasons for a 5-star rating and why anyone reading this would do very well to visit the Ace for any reason. 1. Expertise and want to share it. 2. Incredibly helpful staff. 3. A very understanding and fair return policy. 3. Products you won't find anywhere else all together in a neighborhood. 4. A local business where things are not always easy and where it might have been easier to pick up stakes and move out. Here's an example of what you might find in here. It was pouring down rain, I mean pouring, and a very well dressed woman came into the store half soaked. "you don't by chance sell umbrellas do you? Yes they did, a very nice large one for $12 and the employee also give her a plastic poncho. Seriously, who sells ponchos with paint? I love this place. Juan I walked in the door and was greeted by a young man with a smile and, “Can I help you with something?” Happy and grateful for that greeting, I explained, “I am looking for two 18” metal rods for a tabletop fountain project.” His smile got bigger as he said, “I like projects!” He took me to the metal rods, but they were to small in diameter to support the heavy statue that’s the centerpiece of the fountain. I asked him if he had any suggestions. He said, ”A garden steak, but it’s green.” I said perfect, the statue is light green!

The steak was the exact diameter I was looking for and made of steel strong enough to hold the centerpiece! He cut the 6’green steak into two,18” rods and three, 4” decorative pieces. Meanwhile, a coworker had been asking him for advice for another customer. As I looked at his name tag I said, “Juan you must be an expert." He said with his big smile, “I have been doing this for 18 years!” I thanked Juan for his excellent customer service.
