Wonderful handmade chocolates but not Mitchell's. A wonderful selection of handmade chocolates and traditional candies in a similar style of the old Mitchell's store. The chocolates are handmade quality and delicious so worth the stop if you are looking for a local treat, and they offer a lot of of styles and varieties you simply cant get at other chocolatiers. However, if you are looking for Mitchell's Handmade Chocolates this is no longer the place, the chocolates are definitely not the same. The texture and richness of the chocolate is not on the same level Mitchell's originally was, the alcohol in the rum balls doesnt have a kick, and the tart bite you got from the chocolate covered orange peels isnt there. Instead most of the chocolates are over candied/sugared so they have lost their complex flavors and instead are just sweetness, also the texture is a bit more waxy, these don't make the chocolates bad just not as good as what made Mitchell's their fame. If you love to make chocolates and want your name known you should start your own chocolate shop and the community will support you, not take over someone elses name, and if you do you hopefully will hold up to that same standard but that is not the case. They are still good chocolate but if you were a true longtime fan of Mitchell's just know that you could stop by a local chocolatier much closer to you for the same quality as there is nothing that makes these a step above any other hand made chocolate shop. The owners were polite, though there seemed to be some minor teeth clenching going on hearing for the 5 millionth time how wonderful the old...
Read moreI recently ordered two one pound boxes of dark chocolate almond bark. My family and I had enjoyed this product for many years, so much so that I ordered this chocolate —even though I live in NYC, the home of marvelous chocolate—to be sent to me long distance for Christmas presents. Recently the owners of Mitchell's Fine Chocolates had changed, but the person who took my order assured me the recipe for the dark chocolate almond bark had not changed. However, the chocolate that arrived from Mitchells was mediocre at best, and mediocre would be a euphemism. After tasting a piece from one box, I determined I could not give it away except to the building staff as chocolate that was substandard but still might be appreciated if no other snack was available on late night shifts. I opened the second box last night and had three friends taste it. The verdict: "taste's like Hershey's" ; another person said: "is this even dark chocolate? it has no richness or flavor—it's just sugary; my third guest said: "the almonds are stale." So I am about to throw the second box of "fine chocolates" away. Each box was something like 34 dollars, and of course there was shipping. My recommendation: give Mitchell's Fine Chocolates a miss, and you won't be...
Read moreI was really hoping to give them 5 stars, but after my last experience, I'm unable to ever support them again (and I've been a customer for many years!) Here's my story: I made an online reservation for a shopping experience for me and my husband for my birthday. We were greeted immediately and the staff was very friendly. I wanted two boxes of hand- picked chocolates. The man didn't disclose how I was being charged or how much my box weighed, but he certainly made sure to pad the box and drive my total up. He put things I didn't ask for in, or put in more than what I asked for. To make matters worse, at the end, he filled the box with chocolate covered espresso beans and definitely charged me a higher price. Within 24 hours, I called the manager with the vague receipt and told her I thought the entire transaction was shady and uncomfortable. They acted like I mattered and told me I would be contacted in a few days to rectify the situation... but no one ever followed up with me. I am more upset now than I was when I called initially. Apparently, I don't matter and I cannot support a business that only wants me to spend more without being clear on what I'm spending...
