I'm a 65-year old native Fresnan, and a retired teacher. I have never been a member of Costco but generally have a favorable opinion of it, despite a life-long disdain for memberships of any kind. However, my 14 year old nephew has strenuously encouraged my joining Costco for some time, in order to facilitate his (and my) access to certain items and deals that he is convinced can be obtained nowhere else. Eventually, I agreed and, after a careful consideration of the various membership levels and their prices (featured on their website), we visited their new location in Clovis. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a young lady at the membership counter who answered our questions: No, my nephew cannot have a membership of his own because he is not 18. No, my nephew cannot be authorized to use my Gold membership if purchased. No, my nephew cannot be added to my account even if I opted for an Executive membership which allows an associate member. Okay, so I would simply need to accompany my nephew to each and every Costco purchase he makes which is not an ideal situation but is do-able; right? It would be, except for two glaring and equally infuriating reasons: (1) The young lady who had answered our questions had also explained the benefits of their Executive membership, which I politely declined at the outset. Nonetheless, she lectured us both at length on the extensive array of benefits and savings available only in the Executive plan, saying it is the "only intelligent option" and asking "why would [I] insist on a Gold membership which gives [me] nothing?" But a Gold membership would allow me to shop immediately, would it not? It would, but she was not prepared to sell me a Gold membership; at least not yet. After 40 minutes of this back and forth, I offered that I wanted to consider an Executive upgrade for a few more days and would like to start with the Gold plan in the meantime; okay?. Still, it took another 10 minutes or so to get the young lady to acquiesce to my Gold membership, as I had requested over and over. (2) Having finally prevailed in being allowed my own choice of plan, we were certainly eager to proceed to that purchase and be done with it. That is when we were greeted with the surprising news that our payment card (American Express) is not accepted at Costco. Really? Who knew? So, as it were, all of our best and concerted efforts at Costco membership came to naught and forced us to leave empty-handed. Oh, we could have gone to a MoneyPass ATM somewhere and came back with cash but by then I was frankly too tired. I really dislike the marketing practice of first stating a (lower) price and then hitting the consumer with a (higher) price for dubious extra benefits. The practice is rampant on the internet where a "free" trial membership if not canceled within a small window of time through a tedious process ends up becoming a painful and expensive ordeal, and where the Pro version performs and your standard version nags in every installed app on your smartphone and/or computer. These kinds of practices, in the aggregate, gave rise to my "life-long disdain for memberships of any kind" in the first place. Costco can and should do...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI have no problem with the merchandise carried in the store. I do have problems with the vendors! This is my experience: Basically they have a great sense of confidence that since Costco has chosen them over other competitors in the same product line, they have an sense of over confidence and that we should trust them without question. They are the best and the most honest. This leads to an arrogance in dealing with them when there are problems with their salesmanship. I will give you two examples that has led me to seek other options in the future and not put my trust in the backing of the Costco name! I will warn you about the flooring company that they use (or who uses them). First, get the exact price per square foot for the covering that you have chosen and then the total that includes the extra footage. Then get the exact cost of labor per square foot that includes the baseboards (if done). We did not do this. Each item needs to individually itemized and written down what is ordered and its cost!!! Do not allow the sales pitch about "no tax today and the extra gift cards!" They offer that all the time!! Now take your paperwork and do comparisons at other places!! I RECOMMEND Robinson's with a great reputation or Quality Carpets to at least to do a comparison. Do not sign with them until you know where your money is going. This company is named CARPET OUTLET PLUS. The other company that we dealt with was ECOWATER SYSTEMS for conditioner/refiner & reverse osmosis which was really expensive. We took a survey of how much we spend on cleaners and soaps and was promised that we would get rewards for equivalent to 5 years of products to use and it was free. They left no paperwork for this but he said he was going to sign us up and email us for the information so we can acquire these items. Well, we never got that information. We called a told them three time that we did not the information for these products. We have yet to hear from them 8 months later. I am sick of dealing with them when they deceive you and do not think they need to protect their reputation with excellent service because Costco stands behind them (if only in name) with their outstanding...
