Mount Washington has some of the most severe weather in the world - and changeable. I have been up on both the Cog Railway - which I love - and the road. The important thing to be aware of is that you cannot assume that there will be great weather on top of Mountain - even if you start out on a clear, nice day.

I suggest some warm layers even if you are starting out on a hot day. Many innocent hikers have started up the mountain unprepared -and the most unfortunate have rock cairns where they perished - - please don't underestimate Mount Washington. Going up the special drive road you can experience many types of weather - so drive carefully. Many do find that bringing trailers up is difficult.

If it is good weather when you reach the top - the views are amazing - and worth it! It takes about an hour to look around - I like taking a picnic - -

And do consider taking the Cog Railway up - but know that you will have to usually have to have reservations at least a few days in advance - more...

I have driven up and taken the Cog up. The day we drove was one we will never forget! We went through all 4 seasons in 1 day. Sunny and warm when we started, cold & snowing at the top.. Scariest drive I've ever taken but worth it! Couldn't see a thing (or person beside you) at the top that day. Going up was gorgeous until we got into the clouds.. Less scary when you cannot see the massive cliffs you drive on. There are a lot of places you can stop along the road too. Even water stops for your vehicle to help your brakes from over heating going back down. Took the Cog the next year and it was phenomenal! The people who work on it are amazing! The views, the history, the observatory, the serenity it brings.. 100% worth every penny! Look forward to hiking up some day too.. Make sure you check the weather forecast though! Trust me, you WANT to see the views!! They are literally...

We visited Mount Washington on July 25, 2014 as part of our upper east coast trip. I wanted to visit it after I read about it in National Geographic, especially about the wind speed and temperature drop on the summit. We went up via the toll auto road. The drive up and down is not really scary as long as you are careful. As a matter of fact, I felt it is too short a drive. The views along the drive are great, but less grand than those in wild west. The most impressive part is really the top about the fierce wind force, the fast-moving cloud, the chilly temperature, the story behind people working there or hiking there and the historical tragedies as a result of the bad weather. I think it is one of a kind experience. The only con is I wish the auto tool is by car without charging additional each...

As far as national parks go this one is on the pricier side to drive up the auto road (I’m comparing to recent experiences at Bandolier national park in New Mexico, for example) because they don’t charge per vehicle but rather by person in the vehicle, but still very much worth the price for the views along the way. No pictures from the very top this time because the summit was enveloped in a cloud, so pictures are of the view in mid-October as we came back down from the summit and pulled off in subsequently lower car turn-off points to cool the brakes of the car and enjoy the views. We were also (pleasantly) surprised that the gift shop at the top WAS open even though the toll booth attendant had warned us there was no facilities open at the top. Struck me as a bit strange.

Sitting atop the Northeast’s tallest peak, Mount Washington is the Mount Washington Observatory. Founded in 1932 On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind speed of 231 mph - the world record for most of the 20th century and still the record for a measured speed, not produced by a tropical cyclone. the Mount Washington Observatory and Weather Station has been continually manned to record the weather and other atmospheric data. there is a live cam you can find on the web. The Summit of Mount Washington is either in the clouds or fog for at least 300 days per year. The Lowest recorded temperature on the Peak of Mt Washington is 47 Degrees F below zero.

Superb climb up on a perfect weather day. Our van driver Carol was passionate and outstanding as she delivered a wonderful review of the history of the Auto Road and Mt. Washington...home to the worst weather in the world. An excellent take in and a must do if you are visiting this region. Pick a clear day if you can because the summit is often enveloped in clouds 70% of the time. Take a tour in the Observatory ( prebooked) and see the museum for detailed information on life at the top of the highest mountain in the Northeast and some of the tragedies that have occurred. Also the detailed story of the strongest wind gust ever recorded in April 1934.
