Leaving the email I wrote to them here about my experience:
"To Whom It May Concern,
I wanted to let you know about my experience at the House of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée. I would like to start by saying most of the night was lovely; most of your cast and crew were warm, pleasant, welcoming, and professional for the entire experience. The drinks were also delicious (especially the apple-cider one!) and, overall, it was a great interactive experience for both me and my friend who joined me.
Now, onto the issue that the main actress (the hostess with the white wig and horns) had with our outfits. Both I and my friend had never been to an event like this. When asked, we were given a vague idea of what to wear and to check the FAQs. After reading the FAQs, we didn't fully understand the specific theme and decided to wear the costumes we already bought for Halloween this year, a costume I have budgeted for in order to be able to afford it, along with the tickets to this event.
Upon arrival, a lot of people loved our costumes as Elle Woods and Regina George. We quite obviously didn't fit in wearing our bunny costumes but we were having a great time nonetheless and were respectful of the rules and guidelines. Eventually, she confronted us and asked for an explanation of our costumes. We told her that the FAQ wasn't clear to us so we came with what we already had. She responded, "At least you have a reason... but let me tell you, you should let the men wonder." During the entire event, we heard the hostess making quite rude remarks about our outfits such as telling another cast member, "...I already called them classless and they took it in stride, so I'll give them that.".
I understand that the event is set in the past but quite a lot of people were not technically "time period correct" and we heard no remarks about the men wearing Dumb and Dumber costumes or the men wearing khaki shorts and t-shirts, not in costume at all. It felt quite sexist. I also understand that she is playing a character, the hostess, but again, we paid $140+ to be roasted by someone who struggles with internalized misogyny for two straight hours. We already knew we stood out and it felt like she was purposely trying to shame us when we were just trying to have a good time and enjoy the atmosphere.
We will not be joining this event again next year if we are going to be berated by paid staff for our Halloween costumes at what is essentially a costume party.
Thank you to the staff who treated us kindly and complimented our costumes (which was 99.9% of them.)"
By the way I'M A LESBIAN and am not concerned about giving men something to fantasize about, but thanks. 😊
TLDR; Hostess berated both me and my friend's Halloween costumes the entire event. Said super problematic, misogynistic, and sexist things both to our faces and behind our backs. Drinks were great, VIP was a snoozefest, not for you if you don't scare easily and want that. Save your money, go to another well established...
Read morePlease, please be aware of your surroundings at this event. My friend and I went last night and we were having a very good time until the event ended. Neither one of us drank enough to become drunk, however, my friend and I were standing in front of the house ordering an Uber to take us home, when she suddenly collapsed. She said she believed she had been drugged. She suddenly became euphoric and giggly and had a difficult time standing. I guided her to the sidewalk to wait for our Uber and while waiting, two more women from two others groups, also collapsed. I knew at that point that something was terribly wrong and the drugging was not isolated to her. One of the other women who collapsed was in a group of 3 married couples and she was taken to the ER because she had split her head open on the concrete in the fall. She is ok now, however she received 4 staples in her head, and they are awaiting toxicology test results to come back. i also took my friend to the emergency room for a drug panel and we are waiting for those results as well. My friend reached a point where she was unable to move any except her hands and had to be carried to the restroom as she could not walk. We are filing a police report when the test results come back, as they could not investigate unless we can prove she was drugged. I am also in contact with the husband whose wife was injured to corroborate each others stories. I suspect there are others who were drugged as well, due to the fact that there were three women in close proximity of each other who were victims and there were many people in different locations on the property. There is no way of blaming the venue, as it could have been anybody, but I really want to get the word out to protect yourselves and document this incident if it happens again at the same event or any other event in Dallas. I have reached out to Fever and am waiting for someone to get in contact with me. Have fun, but please keep...
Read moreI feel like this is one of those things that were well intended and had potential but carry out failed big time. The story line was changed, so it didn't match what their website stated. Their website stated there would be food and there was not. It was hard to tell who were characters but we did find 2. However with the changed story line, we never could figure out what the point was. The basement was fun. But very short. The upstairs was fun too, but after the first room we got pushed forward into the group ahead of us and they got to do all of the work since they were ahead of us so we basically just had to stand and watch them do it all. There wasn't any seating in the place. There also wasn't an actual bar inside. Only 4 spots where they had a specific drink they offer. This is all in addition to having to wait outside the place for well over 30 minutes because they opened late. We arrived early because their website said there was a "pre-show lounge to enjoy". There isn't. They have place to get drinks and a couple of tables in the front yard that we couldn't even access due to them making everyone stand outside of the fence, until well after start time. This is one of those things that it was fun to get dressed up and do since we never get to. But sucks that it was so expensive and they didn't provide or do what they said they would. I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend anyone to spend the money on it. But to point out the good, the female singer is amazing. Loved her makeup. The basement was fun. The upstairs actors and costumes were awesome. But overall this should have been a $20 experience, maybe $30 with the drinks. Which were miniature as stated on their website. For these reasons I give...
