Fox Theatre — Local services in Detroit

I attended the Mother's Day concert at the Fox Theatre on May 11, and it was a bittersweet experience. Here’s a quick rundown of my thoughts:

Company: I was joined by my aunt Hattie, my bonus daughter Robyn, and my husband. Originally, we planned to bring Robyn's grandmother, who sadly transitioned to heaven over Easter weekend. It was bittersweet having Robyn join us in her place, but she was very happy to be there, and we all felt that our beloved grandmother, affectionately known as Grand Grand, was smiling down on us, enjoying the moment.

Performances: Despite the emotional weight, we were thoroughly satisfied with the powerhouse performances from all the artists.

Standout Artist: The breakout star for me was definitely Jekalyn Carr. Her energy and the power of God radiated through her prophetic message, music, and praise dance.

Highlight: Of course, the cherry on top was Pastor Bishop Marvin L. Winans—he was the icing on the cake!

Sound Quality: I’m giving four stars instead of five because, despite my excitement, I was disappointed with the sound quality. Some artists sounded distorted during their performances, and if I hadn’t known their usual quality, I might have thought they couldn’t sing. This issue has persisted since my last visit, and it's frustrating.

Overall, it was a memorable night filled with love and joy, but I hope the Fox Theatre can improve its audio setup for future events.

As an experienced theater goer, I was DISGUSTED with how my experience went for the 12pm showing of the Nutcracker on 12/11/22. There were several emails sent out prior explaining purse restrictions and traffic concerns (conflicting with the 11am Lions game) and explanations of how late comers may not be seating in their ticket’s seats or let in the house until an appropriate time. Well, the show started at 1215, not 12…and people were still coming down the isles and standing in peoples’ views for the next 35 mins. Literally 5 mins before intermission, people were taking their seats. HOW was this permitted?! Paying higher amounts for a floor seat to have people standing and having to climb over seated or now standing people. Ushers shining lights to help them find their seats on top of that. Then intermission was an absolute nightmare with only ONE bathroom location and ONE handicap accessible bathroom, with no clear signs of the location of an elevator (if there even was one.) I was with my elderly mother whom needed a handicap stall and there was a line with ALL able bodied people and children in it. No control manning the line. By the time we were able to use the bathroom the second act had started…DO BETTER. I will never pay to come to the Fox Theater AGAIN, which is a shame, because it IS beautiful and what we saw of the performance...
