Germack is a legendary Detroit brand. I've gone there previously to purchase gifts for Christmas, and we stopped in a few times a year next door to purchase coffee, which is better than the nuts. During my last visit before Christmas, I was highly disappointed with the condition and atmosphere of the store.
It was a snowy day, and when I walked in the rug in front of the door with saturated with water, and there was water all over the Slate floor. A man who is selling rosaries followed me into the store and asked me if I wanted to purchase one. I declined curtly, and I was disappointed that the staff was allowing a man from outside the store to solicit customers in the store. The music was Heavy Metal. I was surprised, since nearly everyone in the store was there to purchase Christmas items.
I shopped the store for about 20 minutes and found several items that fit the bill for Christmas packages and stocking stuffers. The pre-made baskets are ridiculously overpriced. I found several items on the Shelf that I will pack into boxes and send as gifts, for about half the price of the baskets.
When I left the store and returned to my vehicle, the man with the rosaries followed me and solicited me again. I'm more politely decline his offer, saying No thank you. I got in my car, while he stayed across the street near Supino's pizza. He then began to yell at me, telling me that I didn't need to give him attitude if I didn't want to purchase his rosaries, and that he was just out on the street trying to make an honest living. I looked at him through my car window, raising my eyebrows. This was perhaps the last straw for him, as he started yelling what's up at me repeatedly. He stuck his hand in his pants pocket, perhaps insinuating that whatever was in his pants pocket was going to be a danger to me and my vehicle. He eventually pulled out his cell phone while I drove away.
I love going to Eastern Market, and I will continue to go to germac and other establishments. It's been years since I attracted the attention of a rude Street Merchant. My interaction with him was a poor Coda to a mediocre...

Read moreI grew up in metro Detroit during the 70s and 80s and loved Germack pistachios, but haven't lived in the area in 20+ years. I follow them on Facebook and recently saw one of their ads and saw red pistachios, which I hadn't seen in decades, and just had to place an order to get some shipped to me. I received my order in just a few days, and am once again enjoyig the taste of their pistachios. While I fel the price of the nuts are a bit high for the size of the bags, I do know pistachios are relatively expensive to begin with. I will definitely be placing future orders...
