Cute shop, horrible experience. Yesterday, a staff member accused me of stealing, said she saw me place store items in my hulken bag. I said I did not, she insisted she saw me do it. I offered for her to look through my bag, where she poked around and accused me of stealing some kettle chips that I had left over from lunch at Tocororo!
Don’t know why she wanted to “get me” so bad. Uncomfortable and offensive experience. It was my sisters birthday and we were having a day out. I spoke to the manager (Megan) who basically doubled down and recited a lame “sorry if she was rude but this is how it is because we have a lot of theft in the store and she thought you were stealing”. She then pointed me to 1 of the 200 various printer-paper signs hanging up that said “use in-store baskets while you shop”. I assured her that I DID NOT put any items in my personal bag. All I had in hand was $4 teriyaki sauce and $3 horseradish!
To Megan the Manager: The issue is not whether I used an in store basket (other shoppers weren’t using a basket either, I would have happily used one if I knew the policy)- it’s that a staff member blatantly insisted that she saw me stealing, when I obviously did not. And you doubled down.
The only highlight was the kind woman at the cash register who was empathetic about the situation. Feels like if you aren’t a middle age white woman you will be accused of stealing…but that’s just...
Read moreShopping on a Gaga and Tyler's Surprise Adventure Day. We had intended to be at the outdoor shops of the Christmas Marketplace but the weather was very cold and snowing. With every adventure we have learned to pivot when find our adventure day weather not being cooperative. So indoors we went and the many stores of Eastern Market were our first choice. Devries & Co never disappoint, the vast selection of gifts that we were able to find more than fill stockings and other gift items. Of course we had to buy some cheese as well. We had a wonderful time and plan to return for a cheese tasting to celebrate another upcoming birthday, after all, it isn't every day that great Papa will celebrate his 94th birthday. Since Tyler enjoys cooking lessons on his weekends at my house, we start by choosing recipes, why not learn to shop for those ingredients together. He thinks that this is all fun but what he doesn't realize is this is my way of raising a future man who is prepared to cook and entertain his friends and family members. He can bake, cook, and set a table properly, he even has learned which pieces of china, silverware and glassware that is to be used with each part of the meal. We can't wait for our next adventure day, next month is Valentines dinner, he has already asked to return to Devries & Co for gifts and cheeses that will be used...
Read moreLove this store. The cheese, tea and food selection downstairs are fantastic. And the upper floors with their various Michigan made products and metal sculptures include so many unique items perfect for gifts or home decor. They also have one of the oldest working elevators in Detroit (though it’s staff only, so don’t try to use it!). Megan, Karen and the rest of the staff are also a pleasure to regularly see and get help from. Just keep in mind while shopping here- their cheeses aren’t all out on display like in many delis. They are in the cooler behind the counter, but the staff is more than happy to explain all of the options they have that day and let you see or sample anything you’re interested in. I’m very much a visual shopper so this was something I was surprised by, but it makes sense when they go through various unique types so often. If you’re already in the area, highly recommend walking around and browsing all of the murals nearby. They change about every one or two years and are always...
