My Special Toy Store — Local services in Downers Grove

I couldn't have been more pleased with my experience at this store. I needed to buy a gift for my neice's first birthday and I've never purchased a gift for a child or had any idea what to get. A friend recommended I go here because they had been so helpful. I told the two lovely women behind the counter my predicament and asked if they had any advice on what a 1-year-old might like. Mary immediately walked me over and showed me some options of toys for that age range and some specific toys that had been very popular. She answered my questions and gave me two or three specific options that she thought would be the best. I picked one out and they did a great job gift wrapping the present as well. I rarely write such a lengthy review of a store I patronize, if I write one at all. But when a store and it's employees do such a fantastic job of helping a confused, first-time uncle who has no idea what he's going to buy feel totally pleased and confident with the gift he's giving his adorable neice, I felt I needed to share that experience. Had an issue with a Calico Critters set purchased in Dec where there were missing/damaged pieces in the box. I was not looking for a refund, but simply an exchange of the merchandise -- not an unreasonable request considering the set was nearly $80. After a conversation with the owner over the phone (we live out of town), she reluctantly said she'd 'try' to reach out to the manufacturer after I sent an email with some pictures of the set. I promptly sent the email...no response. I then called back and left messages for her on two separate occasions over the following weeks and never heard back. I have never seen such poor customer service in my life. I love the idea of supporting small businesses, but not when they treat you like this. This store has so many cool and educational toys. My problem with it is the pricing on toys that you can get at Target or amazon. For example, Melissa and Doug toys are marked up 10$ ! A play laundry set and instrument set are two examples. I even asked if they do price matching - I was given a hard 'no' - so I bought the toys elsewhere. The same Sensory bins are 16.99 at other stores. Here they are 26.99. Not sure why toys that are available everywhere else are marked up so high and they didn't care to give any explanation. I've spent a lot of money at this store over the years and have never been able to redeem my rewards. I always forget the piece of mail (my fault) so I've had my husband send a photo of the code and they won't accept it. Maybe time to update that system.
