We had an awful experience with this rental location from Day #1. The apartment was not in move-in ready condition on the first day of our lease - there was dust in a number of places, the showers & bathrooms hadn't been properly cleaned, the paint & floor wax job was rushed (numerous pieces of dust and hair caught in between the fresh coats of paint/wax and the surface that they were applied to), etc. Further, as we spent some time acclimating to the overall grounds, we were even more put off with the cleanliness of the community: the stairways were always a mess - they looked like they hadn't had a fresh coat of paint in years, the carpets were disgusting and they smelled. Also, we did not see the community taking steps to reprimand residents whose dogs had accidents in common spaces (disgusting), nor to prevent people from using common hallway areas as repositories for their unwanted home goods.
The other HUGE issue we had with this apartment complex was the poor quality build of the units themselves - we literally fell asleep each night either to the sound of our neighbor snoring, our neighbor's dogs barking, or a neighbor's baby screaming. Also, to have a hard surface floor material in the hallways of the buildings did not help the acoustics at all - we could hear noises from the hallways seep into our apartment day and night. That was an extremely poor choice of flooring, especially considering the poor quality construction of the units to begin with.
While they typically got tickets fulfilled in an acceptable time frame, the maintenance staff were very unfriendly. The only one who was somewhat social was Wayne. Also, they never called ahead of arrival, which we requested they do! Numerous times, we would notice the other two maintenance guys riding around in the maintenance cart seemingly just hanging out together. Glad to see our money put to good use...
We had a really awful experience with the Community Manager, Mark Bartholomew. He was very rude in handling an issue we brought up to him with our neighbor's shower pipes screeching at a high-pitched noise every morning, waking us up well before sunrise. The problem persisted for over two months, without clear communication from the River Club on how they were working towards a solution. And when we requested that the River Club provide us with a small rent credit so we could go out and purchase a sound-masking machine to help mask the obtrusive noise, Mark was unwilling to assist us with a temporary solution while the problem was being worked on. This made us feel that our business was not appreciated by the River Club, and that we could never call this place "home" if we were treated that way by the community manager. Very frustrating.
Also, another issue we had was the execution of our move-out inspections. First of all, no one ever showed up for our PRE move-out inspection- not for the first day it was scheduled or for the day it got rescheduled... We scheduled the POST move-out inspection with Mark, to occur with Wayne, for 1pm on the day of our move out. I'm not sure how the miscommunication happened on the River Club's end of things, but apparently Wayne was unaware of the 1pm appointment (When we came into the leasing office flustered and annoyed that Wayne hadn't showed up by 1:45pm, we were told by one of the leasing agents that Wayne was on vacation up until that day, and wasn't notified that he had appointments...However, when we later saw Mark, he made up a totally different excuse for Wayne not being on time, and gave us a half-ass apology...) and didn't show up until 3pm. To say this was the icing on the frustrating River Club cake would be an understatement.
THEN, as if all of these experiences weren't bad enough to turn us off completely, the River Club somehow messed up our final billing statement, and sent us a bill for over $4,000 - when, in turn, the River Club should have been cutting us a check for the cost of our security deposit...and it took weeks to resolve...
I would never recommend living...
Read moreIt has been two months since we moved to River Club Apartments. I waited to write the review so that I can provide as much detail as possible for someone considering to lease an apartment here.
Leasing Experience - Very nice experience. I called the leasing office on a Sunday morning. Luckily my call as well as all the questions I had were answered to my satisfaction. By noon, we were sitting in the leasing office and Roseanna helped us fill in the application after showing us the apartment. She was very professional and patient. We got our application approved on the same day (it was a Sunday!). I am really impressed by the smooth and efficient leasing experience I had with River Club. Moving into our newly leased apartment was equally quick and simple.
Talking about maintenance, the staff is experienced and prudent. I had issues accessing mailbox (the key action was not smooth). I called the management office about it. As it was my first time, instead of pointing me to the maintenance request portal to raise the request, my request was taken over the phone and under 3 hours from the call I was given a new mailbox key. That said, their maintenance portal is easy to use. Email responses from property manager are pretty quick as well (same day within a few hours)
Fees and Charges - You would essentially be charged for everything. These are by far the most charges I have ever seen in my apartment leasing experience (Garbage removal, sewer/water, electric, gas to name a few). All these charges are not part of your base rent and you pay them extra. Some of these are individual consumption based (water, gas, electric) which in a way helps us conserve/save better. No one would like to see so many charges appearing on the rent statement on a monthly basis but we are slowly getting used to it. On the positive side, would like to note that amenities are included in the rent.
Community/Amenities - The community is gated, smoke-free and has ample open space filled with grass and trees. Gym and swimming pool are part of amenities. Last month they got 6 new bikes which residents can use as part of amenities. Given the community has open space as well as backdoor access to river walk we enjoy using these bikes.
Commute to NYC - 5 to 10 minute walk to bus stop. There is one bus (158) that goes to a port authority bus terminal. Frequency is good and it takes about 35 min (+/- 10 min depending on time of the day) to reach there. I find the commute pretty good. The bus stop while on our way back is right next to the gate of the community.
Shopping - ACME and other shopping complexes are at a 5 min walk. Can’t ask for more. That said, you do need a car for other activities (parking charges extra).
Pets - We don’t have pets but a lot of people in the community do and it is fun watching the dogs play in dog park.
Apartment - We moved into a recently renovated apartment. So it has everything we wished for and more. The noise levels are minimal (maybe we are lucky to have quiet neighbors)
PS: I have no incentive in writing this review. I am just a happy resident who thought of sharing this information to help other applicants considering...
Read moreWhen you look from outside this place seems to offer many. And they treat you nice until you sign the lease. But be aware, they only care for future residents. There is a reason that there are plenty of available apartments on all seasons of the year even in this relatively low price range. I have been living here for a year, and since they offered me a higher price for next lease term than all the other RiverClub apartments on the market (which is disrespectful and unacceptable) I am planning to move.
I tried to include all the aspects for possible residents.
So, in general, the layouts and landscape is good and the location is convenient, that is why I think complex deserves the only extra star.
Apartments- we live in Landmark apartments and if you don't mind the stairs the layout is good and has lots of space. There are many closets and they are really efficient. The biggest downside of the apartments for me are the windows. The quality of windows are so cheap that you can feel the wind from inside of the apartment. And our kids bedroom was colder during the winter for some reason which was not a desirable situation for us as parents. The flooring is old and squeaks a lot, if you have a light sleeper at home, it can be a challenge. And since all the Landmarks are on the second floor, and the floors are so cheapmade, be ready for complaints from the neighbours who live on the first floor if you are planning to go with this plan. And the washers make a lot of noise. Beginning from April they have started to maintain the landscape with outdated noisy equipment and it takes 2-3 days every week. The sound is just unbearable sometimes.
Maintenance team- they are generally on time, but grumpy all the time. And if they can't come on time they try to come next day without any notice.
Complex- i am not sure if anyone mentioned it but the chemical smell from the river is our biggest concern, it is present at least one day every week, some weeks everyday, if you open the window it is all in the apartment and it is disgusting. I haven't used the pool last summer, but whenever I passed by(during weekdays), there was no lifeguard so it was closed. It has a nice dog park, I can't say much since I don't have a pet. But as a parent of a toddler I can say that they offer nothing for kids. And there is no place to sit or eat around grills, which is weird.
Security- important!!! the leasing office doesn't care about the security at all!!! There are many packages stolen from mail rooms, including our 3 packages. The management knows this issue and did nothing about that. The gates are broken/not working most of the time. Even some of the outdoor doors can be opened without key.
Lease at...
