I really enjoy Half Price Books. I have bought and sold books here, so let me speak to both aspects.
Each time I've sold books here, the wait is not very long. Only on one occasion did I have to wait an hour and that was because it was a busy weekend and multiple people had come in with more than 30 books. I get a fair price for the books they accept. I usually research online before I go into the store so I can know what "fair" is. They also accept books that an online book buyer may not take. The workers who give me the offer have never been rude and despite always being busy when I'm there, are in a pleasant mood. I bring in some books that I no longer want, and then I get a fair cash payment for them. Wahoo!
Buying books at Half Price Books is pretty darn easy. If I am looking for a specific book, I will usually call ahead to ask. If they do not have it, they check surrounding stores that have it in stock and inform me of their address. If the book is available for store to store shipping, they set that up for me and call me when it's available. A very easy process! Most of the time, their prices are a little higher than online, but the benefit is knowing the exact condition of the book and the immediacy of the transaction. This past week though they had an awesome sale. A couple of days were 30% off your highest price book and it gradually increased until Sunday, which was 50% off! Pay attention to sales and get an even better deal on books that you want.
Overall, Half Price Books is a solid place to buy or sell lightly used or new books. Customer service is everything I could ask for. Only reason why I am not giving 5 stars is because most of their regular priced items are higher than online...
Read more67 cents - That's what I was offered for 3 books (in excellent like new condition). Those same three used books were for sale at this very location at the time of that offer for a total of $27.05 - seriously - rip off. Also, check Amazon for purchasing books over HP Books. They sell new books often for cheaper than HalfPriced books sells their used ones. You can occasionally find a decent book to purchase at a good price in the store, but I've also paid top dollar for a used book in bad condition. This compamy more than likely lost me, this goes for other locations as well. SELL YOUR BOOKS AT A GARAGE SALE, DONATE, OR CREATE A BOOK CLUB BEFORE SELLING TO HALF PRICED BOOKS. *SIDE NOTE - Purchased a used copy of Run Rose Run for $13.99 at HPBooks. One week later they bought it back from me in the same used condition for less than 3 dollars. Meanwhile the same book in NEW condition was for sale on Amazon for $15 and can be delivered same or next...
Read moreMy wife and I love browsing here and do so frequently. Although it’s a favorite spot of ours, we have been disappointed lately. Stock turnover seems to have decreased..seeing a lot of the same stuff visit after visit recently. Also, the recent decategorization of the clearance section was very disappointing and makes browsing very time consuming and frustrating. The shelves in that section seem to be staying much fuller than they used to which indicates to me (and should to the management) that customers aren’t taking time required to comb the shelves to find stuff, myself included. Even a few broad sections would be nice..something besides fiction and nonfiction. Lastly, this store has discontinued its complementary coffee. I know that is a very small thing however it just sat wrong with me on the heels of the clearance fruit-basket-turnover. Customer experience overall seems to have fallen on this stores list...
