Webster's Market Downtown — Local services in Grand Rapids

I work in one of the offices in the Waters Building and stop down to this store almost every day for one thing or another. Every time I go in, the staff is friendly and helpful. I am always greeted with a smile and a "Hello, how are you doing today?" and if I linger for a bit (often times just not being able to decide which candy I want that day, haha) someone almost always asks "Can I help you find anything?" It is extremely rare (Especially in the world we live in today) to ENJOY a customer service experience anywhere. This place is the exception to that reality. As for their inventory, I'm very impressed. They have everything you could ever need on the go; lunch items, a wide selection of sweets, grocery items, just about every beverage that you could imagine, snacks galore, pharmacy items that you'd need in a pinch, feminine products, charging cords, and much much more.

My boyfriend and I were an honors guest of the hotel. We attended a wedding and he went down to this market afterwards to grab a snack.

I don’t know what exactly the older man behind the counter’s problem was, but he immediately implied my boyfriend would steal something from him. He followed him around, asked him to remove his pockets, kept asking him what he wanted, was overall extremely rude and antagonizing. It got so bad that even when he had the items on the counter READY to check out, and was STILL getting interrogated, he decided to just leave and not give this man his business.

Was the issue that he has tattoos? It’s 2023, get over it. And in any case, that’s not a reason to be a judgmental jerk and assume someone is a criminal.

Sure, it's clean. And there is not a lot of choice downtown for a snack or quick drink to go since everything downtown is geared towards restaurants and bars . But $8 for a pint of Ben & Jerry's and almost $3 for an iced tea that cost anywhere from a buck 50 to 2 bucks in any gas station anywhere is pretty ridiculous. If you can't afford the lease or the rent, then you probably shouldn't be in there. Charging customers 100% markup there's no way to do business.
