Book Suey — Local services in Hamtramck

OMG. I can't believe I've lived so close for over 5 years and only just now discovered Book Suey! A small, carefully curated selection of new and old books. Incredibly knowledgeable staff and customers, too. I was there for nearly two hours, mostly talking to other customers. The atmosphere is as warm and welcoming as the free coffee and tea. It truly felt like the safe haven that the best bookstores always do. If you're jonesing for an experience different from a big chain store, I would recommend this store most highly. And Hamtramck is such an interesting community, with lots of different food options within a 5 minute...

Never thought it would be possible to have a poor experience in a bookstore? But here we are. I was having one of the worst days and wanted to cheer myself up by getting a book. I asked an employee for a book recommendation.. said employee didn’t even acknowledge me, when I asked again, eyes were rolled at me. It felt really awful when I was already having an awful day. Then when I checked out they rang me up for the incorrect price. I was so discouraged by the previous encounter with the employee I didn’t even correct them on the price and just paid the extra amount. It’ll be Barnes and Noble from here...

What a great bookstore! The owner/members are friendly and have excellent recommendations. There's a very good selection of graphic novels - I never visit without ending up buying at least one - and a solid sci-fi section, as well. Also well-curated books on social justice, and a section of local authors. Spend your book...
