Usually I would give this place 4 or 5 stars, but today was different. I have been traveling to Harpers Ferry for a long time and have frequented Harpers Ferry Outfitters for quite a few years as well. A unique store in a good location...carrying almost anything you could need for hiking, camping and even bikes for rent. The gentleman (not the person I usually deal with), who I presume is an owner, who was covering the front counter today must have been in a bad mood or something...and was really dismissive of my efforts to rent a bike from him and of limited help in procuring alternatives. "No, we can't rent you a bike...why?...well the bikes are in disrepair...well I traveled a long ways and always rent here...shrug of shoulders...I guess I should have called ahead...expression of well I guess you should have...do you know anyone else who might...well there might someone up the hill..." In Harpers Ferry...even straight back from Harpers Ferry is "up the hill." Attempts to clarify weren't helpful either..hand gestures indicated to go along the river...so "take a left out of your store..." more hand gestures indicating along the river. Ugh. Then I went to a store where I've always been well treated...True Treats! They gave me a map...a brochure...helped with directions...made a phone call or two...wow! Now that's friendliness and treating customers with respect and support. Thanks...

Whether you are a cyclist, hiker, passing pedestrian, or tourist, you will likely be leaving with at least one item in hand. With a filled inventory of gear, T-shirts, accessories and other clothing, freeze-dried foods, and snacks, don't let the store's small size make you think there's nothing to see.
One welcoming resource provided here is the water re-fill station which those stopping by town while on a long trek will...
Read moreGreat experience here! Staff went out of their way to help me find what I needed. Sure it's a bit pricey with not a lot of variety but then again, it's not a big box chain store. It's a local outfitter in a small town so what do you expect? A little bit of almost everything needed to hike in a pinch if you're a hiker/biker especially going a long trail distance to get by until you can get to a larger chain outfitter. For me, I'll take the charm and friendliness any day of the week to one of the big box stores. Highly recommend at...
